Loss of power Towing..??

Hello,
Have a 1995 CTD, auto ,minor upgrades of 4" pipes and TST plate....

Issue is I tow infrquently...Truck is my daily driver and runs like a scalded cat,
however, have had to pull a gooseneck horse trailer 3 times this week, about 100 miles each time because of sick horse...It seems to me that it lacks power while pulling, however once up to 60 and in 4th it runs great. Getting to sixty takes dog years. Tranny does not feel like its slipping?? am I missing something? where is a place to start.......it seems like it doesent pull like it use to.

Thanks,

PaleHorse

The truck is a 95 CTD with a TST plate { can't rrmber which} think it was the #2 or #3... with the new elbow to the wastegate,,,,,,,been on the truck since 96........also has a 4" cat back exaust. Have been hauling a gooseneck a lot last few weeks......once I get to 55 or so and the torque converter locks up , it runs like a champ.......but seems slooooow getting up to speed...
Just had my wrench meister check it out and he found nothing.....there seems to me no slippage in the tranny......just takes a long time to get up to speed, especially on a grade...I am pulling a two horse aluminum goose neck with one horse on board......probaly pulling yhis side of 10K.

I will check the fuel filter.

First I'd check for boost leaks, then check the fuel filter and fuel pressure going into the injection pump. Do you have excess smoke? That's a sign of a boost leak. A #2 plate isn't really a mild mod anymore. Plus, you would need tranny work done to be able to run that. I'm guessing you have a #10 plate or something like that.

nope, ur engines fine. It's ur transmission, hence the reason I swapped in a 5spd. The stock auto is a real dog until the TC locks up. The only way to get the same power ur feeling at 55+ is to get a upgraded Torque converter and/or valve body. I went through the exact same experience as you, the truck would take light years to get up to speed, but once the TC locked up it would blast off like a rocket. If ur willing to spend say $1200 or so(not sure on exact prices), you could get a nice single disc TC and valve body for ur trans that would make a world of a difference.

Thanks for the input......Filters get changed tonight..but it makes sense its the tranny as the motor runs sweet. Now the soul searching......do I dump more dinero into a 12 year old beast or swap trucks. I had intened to run this thing till all the dodge parts fell off it. 100k, just had it repainted....new tires today..Bridgestone revo's.....I could not find a 5 speed when I bot this thing.dammit.

You would be amazed at the dif a good tc/trans will make on these trucks, mine seemed to take off when it locked up in od before i put a new trans in at 165k miles and it is night and day difference but dont overlook the simple things the filters.

Upgrade the tranny and see how that goes. I'm sure it'll make a big difference. I'd hold onto your current truck. Spend just a few grand and have a nice 12 valve Cummins.

Yep, a good torque converter and valve body will have you wondering how you stood to drive it before. I cringe when I ride in a stock automatic now

I dont think I could go back to a stock tranny now after being spoiled with this one. If your truck is in good shape, a rebuilt tranny by one of the main rebuilders is a lot cheaper than many years of monthly payments and more money in your pocket....
