How loose should the steering shaft be?

Not so much the "twist" looseness of it as I understand there will be a little play, but more the "up and down" motion of it. Basically if I grab it and pull up and down on it it feels loose up towards the steering column. I have a rattle that comes through the steering wheel and I am thinking this may be the cause. I just want to make sure before I sink $250 into a new shaft.
