loose pinion
while crawling around the front of the truck i noticed the front pinion has side to side play.... I am assuming worn bearings.
Can i just remove the pinion and have new bearings installed then replace?
does the dana 60 have shims or crush sleeve?
what would cause the bad bearings? especially in the front, not like its being used all the time... kinda makes me worry

hey-Hey!!!,
I've read of pinion play from having the bearings not properly seated. I think that this happened to my D70 in my 1991. It is done with shims, so off with the yoke, and remove shims 'til it was tightened up again. I found this when the seal started leaking. Not sure about the D60 on shim v. sleeve though...your bearings might not be toast, and I am sure the carrier needs to come out to remove the pinion.
cheers.

The D60 has shims to set pinion pre-load. You could try tightening it up, but there is probably a reason it is loose. Like the bearings wore. How much play we talking?
You are going to have to pull the seal the add/remove shims. You really ought to pull the carrier to set the bearing pre-load right.
Probably not what you want to hear, but I would pull it apart and look at the bearings. Rockauto.com has some really good prices on Timken's. One thing I have found numerous times is that running them with loose bearings leads to the races spinning in the hou$ing. Then it gets spendy.
There is a link to the Dana service manual in the sticky.
Happy Thanksgiving!
