Looking for some help
I have a '93 that was running fine on Friday, and when I went out this morning not so much. Cranks over real strong but nothing else. I wondered if it was the shut-off solenoid, but don't know how to test. I have been searching all day for pictures or diagrams of what I need to know, but no luck so far. I found a set of drawings that show me the scews for turning the pump up, but that will only help when it's running. Is the shutoff solenoid on the side of the pump with one wire into it. There is power in that wire when the key is on. Thanks.

I am not real sure what plunger/rod old blues is referring to. I am not a great expert, but the shutoff solenoid is located on top of the square metal casting that all the injector lines are plumbed into. The manual shutoff lever will not help you in this case, I don't think. There is also another wire run to a similar solenoid near the bottom of the pump and is more visible then the shut off solenoid, but this is not the one you are looking for. The shut off solenoid is in a tighter spot located below the AFC diaphragm. I believe, to test the solenoid I would first make sure that it was powered when the key is on. If there is a question I would, hot wire it with an alligator clip, and try cranking again. If this fails then you can remove the whole solenoid. It is a large hex and will be difficult to get a wrench on. But, remove the solenoind and then the spring and plunger associated with it. I think you can replace the solenoid without a spring and plunger for test purposes. If your motor starts you will have to kill it with the manual kill lever on the side of the pump, as there will be no internal plunger to block the fuel passage. These motors are very simple. It only takes fuel and compression in the right time to make them run. If it won't start and ran fine before, it is most likely an issue with fuel and the solenoid is the place to start. Good luck.

PS maybe some more experienced fellas will chime in with more precise advice.

He has a 93, VE pump thus no external lever.
You can remove the shutoff solenoid, it is back by where the injection lines come out, with 1 wire and leave the plunger out, then you should have fuel full time. To shut it off, you then can pull the smaller lever on the side of the pump to manually shut off the fuel. It is spring loaded to open back up when the pressure is released. You could either run this setup for manual fuel control if you want, or if that solved your problem, you can get a new fuel shutoff solenoid cheap enough, used to be less than 50 bucks.
I am not that familiar with the VE 6BT's, but there is also another single plug on the side of the 4BT's, that is a timing advance. It is easy to distinguish between the two as that is further up on the side of the pump and has lines coming in and out of it. You want the one that screws directly into the pump body.

All great info guys. Thanks a bunch. I was out last night until way past dark, and my fingers got pretty cold finding out that I still had fuel at the filter. I put a jumper from the battery to the shutoff solenoid, and it made some noise like it was doing something. Then I tried the primer lever again and there was no response so I lost prime. Now that's tomorrow's job, trying to make sure I have fuel again.
