Mine is a 12 valve but the longest I have let it idle is probably 20 minutes. Usually I bump the rpm to about 1250-1400 rpm if it is going to run for a while. The longest at those rpm's is probably about 1-1 1/2 hours.

Went out on a real cold day negative something degrees to let the flatbed run for a little bit. Went in and completely forgot about the truck running ... ate dinner, showered and watched a movie . Id say all in all about 2 to three hours tops.. Not the longest idle record but I thought share my 2 cents.

For hours on end chugging against the exhaust brake during a super major cold spell in minus way to much temps.
Other than that, maybe 20 minutes or so.

If you do a search on it you will find a few members that leave them run all day long so that they have AC to climb back into. I wouldnt sweat letting her idle for 10-15 minutes.

About 10 hours. I left it running all night on a road trip. I slept in the backseat for most of the night.
Coolant stayed in the normal range.

14 Hrs. went to work turned the key off (TTM keeping it running) walk away. 14hrs later as I came back I hear a diesel idling, then I realize it was mine running! Worst part was that it was @ 1/4 tank of fuel and when I got back the gauge was on E and the low fuel light was on! Luckily I made it to the pump.

Longest mine has idled is a few hours, went to my folks house, left it to cool off, forgot to go back and shut it off...
A buddy's dad had a 93 Ford 7.3 that was not shut off for 5 months. It was a MAJOR pain to restart, only 2 years old, but 150k on it. So he just never shut it off. Sometimes it idled for days while he drove his 93 Cummins. He sold it without ever turning it off...

The longest was on a trip to Utah. I let it sit and idle for about 1-1 1/2! It was 115 degrees in the middle of the desert. Gotta keep the interior cool for the wife and kids. It was so freak'n cold in that truck, we had to turn the a/c off for a couple minutes after we got going.

14 Hours in Houston traffic jam during Hurricane Rita Evacuation. Left idling the whole time for A/C required for my wife and two kids (6 months old and 2.5 years old at that time). Never got close to getting hot.
My 2 cents.

I let mine warm up for 30 minutes everyday before i get in it. Thats how long it takes to get it to operating temp. Is this too long? Anyone think carbon is building up doing this? By the way what is good to use to clean carbon out? Propane, water, ATF?

How long are you supposed to let it idle in warm and cold temps? When it's warm outside, I wait to drive her until my oil pressure comes up and the needle stops moving. Then I go easy on her for the first five minutes? is this necessary or am I just wasting time??

During the coldest winter days running errands around town I'll let mine idle off and on all day. You know........ drive to the store, idle 30 minutes while inside, drive to the hardware store, idle 45 minutes while inside, drive to the bank, idle some more. May not shut it off all day when below zero.

I dont do any of the long idles like mentioned above, but when traveling cross-country, i will pull into a rest stop and kick the rpm's up to about 1200 and sleep in the backseat for about 4-5 hrs with the A/C on. I leave it running when i run in somewhere real quick--<15mins; i just hope my keyless remote battery doesnt fail!
