Lockup Switch Problems.

Well I hooked up a lockup switch on my truck today in order to do some testing to see if it would net me better 1/4 mile times. The lockup switch is doing its job and when its engaged the tranny will not downshift and it will stall the engine if not turned off, so I know that its working. The problem is that if I flip the switch on and then do a full throttle run, the converter wont lock up till the tranny is in overdrive. Even if I flip the switch on right after it shifts into 2nd, it doesnt lock up instantly like it should, in fact I dont think it locks up until I let off of the throttle or after its been in OD for a few seconds.
So whats the deal? Anyone experience anything like this?

This is common with a tight fluid coupling converter.

You mean it is common that it wont engage lockup until OD?

It won't engage with the lockup switch at WOT

A lockup switch will only lock up in 2-3 and 3-4 shift not 1-2 unless you've had some valvebody tricks done.

Check out Mcmopar's picture gallery for wiring diagram.

Do you know the reason for this?

I mean, doesnt a lockup switch just manually control the power to the lockup solenoid? So what is actually keeping it from locking up?

From my understanding there not enough fluid to go to the backside of the converter to engage the lock up clutch, good fluid coupling. Even though the solenoid is grounded, it won't lock up. That's why when you're light on the pedal (not as much fluid coupling) it will lock up with the switch. There only so much that can be done in the valvebody to help cure this.

EDIT: Have you contacted DTT?

My DTT 89% converter locks up just fine in any gear. I would contact either Bill K. or another DTT installer and verify from them the correct wiring for making it work. Floor It was my installer.

I don't think it happens with every converter, just some.

It seems to only be a problem with the "tight" 89% converters. PM me and I will "enlighten" you a bit on what I found on the one I was working on. BTW how are things going with DTT? They should be able to "fix" it.

Have you pulled the relay in the Power Dist block under the hood and installed a jumper wire yet?
