Locker or Posi for Dana 80

Trying to pick up an 01.5 Dodge Ram 2500 6 sp that has the 3.55 gears but no limited slip

So, I would want to add the limited slip or locker

Confused on a couple things

Would the Dana 80 in this be 37 or 35 spline

I see lockers listed for both application. Only a Detroit for 4.10 and up gears.

So, if I have the 35 spline axle the only options are a factory Trash-Lok or ARB. Both of which are expensive. Best price I've seen for the Trac-Lok is $660. $865 plus the compressor for the ARB.

If its a 37 spline then they make a Powertrax No Slip. Which is what I would really like. But if its 35 spline(which I think it is) then they don't list it. Maybe need to call them up. Powertrax website is terrible and doesn't have any updates since 01.

I don't plan on doing any heavy off roading but I would hate to get stuck because of a lack of Posi. We get a lot of snow here in Montana, so I know a locker is not the best for snowy roads either.

The other option I was thinkin about was getting a front limited slip, since I really would only need it in a emergency in 4wd. ARB for the front end is $100 cheaper.

Now, does the 01.5 actually disconnect the front end from spinning like locking hubs? I don't think so? So, I am assuming I wouldn't want to put, say a No Slip in the front end?

Any info is helpful.

No locking hubs.

You do have a CAD (Central Axle Disconnect) that disconnects one side from the differential,
but the other side is always spinning the differential.

You want to put a selectable locker, like the ARB, in the front, something you can turn completely on and off.
Unless it is a trail only rig that will never see pavement, then you could Detroit it.

Do you have 4.10 gears? It lists a Detroit for 4.10 and up only.

Also, I read you can use a Dana 70 Detroit locker if you drill and tap it for larger ring gear bolts.

Anyone do this or know if it applies to other diffs?

Would really like a Truetrac or Powertrax No Slip

You can only use a D70 HD carrier (commonly called a hybrid 70/80 here) in a D80 application. The regular D70 has a carrier all it's own. The D70 HD actually uses a D80 carrier but has the ring bolt circle diameter to match the D70 ring gear. The D70 HD carrier can have the ring gear mounting holes slotted to accomadate the larger D80 ring gear bolt circle. This is a popular mod for a D70 HD Powr Lok LS to be installed in a D80 (the D80 version is no longer offered but the D70 HD version is) as it is the best LS you can buy for the D70 or D80. A few of the larger R & P shops offer this service when you buy a Plok from them.

Stay away from those Truetrac or Powertrax No Slip units, they are light duty stuff. The ARB. Detroit, and Power lock are the only options IMO.

I got 3.55 gears, had to drill the holes out just a little. Not sure what modle locker it is, I just told him what I had and how I was going to abuse it and he boxed on up and sent it out. Greensburg does alot of truck pulling driveline work so I didn't question anything he said

Good info guys

So the Dana Power Lok is better then the Trac Lok correct?

Talked to local off road shop. Supposively about $850 installed for Trac-Lok. About $900-1000 for a Detroit. About $1400 for an ARB.

I was thinkin an ARB and install the compressor and switches and line and everything to save on labor on it.

But I will have to find out how much for a Powr Lok.

I have multiple listings and stories as to how many spline axles the Dana 80 in that truck would be.

4wheelparts and a few others say its a 37 spline

Others, like www.dodgram.org say its a 35 spline

And then, what 70 carrier interchanges? The Dana 70 U 32 or 35 spline or 70 HD 32 or 35 spline.

4 wheelparts says a Cummins auto uses a 32 spline Dana 70.

Anybody actually pulled these apart and know for sure.

The one drawback to the ARB is that moisture in the air lines can freeze and make it useless when you need it.

ALL Dana 80 dodges are 35 spline

All Dana 70HD's are 35 spline

Order a dana 70HD PowerLok for 3.54 gears (same as you have, this is called a 3 series carrier) I think reider racing is right at $450 for the complete Plok carrier and $30 or so for the machine work. prices may have gone up but that rings a bell.

$850+ sounds a little steep but its been awhile since ive done that usually i go to a friend who does rearends and pay $150-200 or i used to spend all afternoon doing it myself.

Most shops dont understand how to get a dana 80 powerlok they just order it right out of a catalog and if they order a dana 80 power lok they will be shipped a dana 80 trak lok since spicer discontinued making the Plok and it is superceeded by the track lok part number and looks very similar shoot they even charge you the same amount for both in the price books. DONT BE FOOLED By the uneducated...... order it from the experts then bring it into the shop to have it installed.

The Track Lok doesnt begine to compare.

Glen,

What type of carrier are you looking for? A locker or a posi? If you have an 2500 auto truck, you most likely have a D70 or a D70 HD as an option. Only manuals and 3500's have D80's. Both D70's in this application have 35 spline shafts. I have never seen or heard of a Dodge D80 with 37 spline shafts.....all the D80 shafts I have seen in a Dodge application were 35 spline. If you want a diff with awesome traction, performance, durability and street manners, then the Plok is by far the best choice for a D80. They even work quite well offroad as long as the tires aren't really large. If ultimate offroad performance and marginal street manners are what you are after, then go for a locker.......otherwise, the Plok LS is the way to go.

Thanks guys

I was thinkin it was a 35 spline because I thought like an F450 would be 37 spline

As for the HD. I think it lists the Dana 70 in autos as being a Dana 70 U?

An HD 70 was in Chevys I'm told.

But, I guess that doesn't matter what it came out of. I guess it only matters what it works in my Dana 80.

Not sure where some of your D70 info is coming from!! Not that I am surprised - most people seem to get D70 stuff mixed up. Never seen a Chevy pickup with a D70HD but I have seen some GM cube vans with them. The D70 U is an odd ball housing ring gear combo and is a little more rare - definitely not in a 2nd gen Dodge - only a D70, D70 HD and a D80 were offered in a 2nd gen CTD rear. But as you said, none of that matters if you have a D80 rear!
