Lock up tranny or 89-91% converter
I know a lot of guys on this forum have gone to better torque converters to get better results from their trannys. I'm just wondering why more haven't converted to a 618 or a lock up . I know that our trucks aren't computer controlled, but can't you operate a lock up tranny with a switch? I'm going to do one or the other next year and I'm wondering what the best option would be.
Thanks

I know that there are a few more things to do this swap than just wiring up a new converter. You will need a new trans adaptor, a tranny designed for lockup (I think, maybe someone can chime in on this) and you may need to shorten the driveline. Not to mention the price of good, lockup converters for high horse applications ($1000+).

Here's what I know. You need a 47RH transmission and a lock-up torque converter, engine to transmission adapter and starter from a 94-95 CTD. Then find a way to controll lock-up and OD using a (mechanical - hydraulic - electronic) speed sensor and a (vacuum - electronic) throttle position sensor to control the overdrive and torque converter lock-up usually controlled by the computer using vacuum and oil pressure switch's.

My tranny guy said that he could turn my 518 into a lockup for about $1800. Maybe I should check into it more and see if this tranny guy really knows what he's talking about.
Thanks

Read this out of the sticky if you haven't already, I described the whole process and what needs and doesn't need to be done.

Since you'd have to replace input shaft anyway, 48 re inputshaft and reaction shaft support would be stronger than stocker and a lot cheaper than billet.
If you're working on 518 then all you would need is lockup valve body to complete conversion to lockup. You can even convert the 727 to lockup, you have to be creative on hooking up the wires to the selenoid on the vb. shouldn't cost anywhere near 1800$ unless that included good torque converter. The reason you need the 2nd gen adapter is the lockup converters are an inch longer than nons, nobody wants to tool up to make converter for first gens, market too small ( I tried, they wouldn't do it ).

Is it worth going to a lock up or just get a real good converter like Gorenend and other mod's. Would there be that big of a difference of getting power to the ground and fuel economy.
Thanks guys for the help.

Theres a shop in Dallas that builds tranny's that can deal with our HP and TQ, the cost is 2500 with a converter. they convert the 727 to a lock up and o/d. The only downside is having to figure a way to control the o/d and LU. I didnt post link cause they arent an advertiser here, feel free pm me.
