lift pump troubles
Yesterday, when leaving my grandmothers house, my truck was hard to start. Once it started, there was a little white smoke and then everything cleared up and it ran great. So I thought. About half a mile down the road the truck died and we coasted to the side of the road. Pulled it home and this morning I did a search and read up on lift pumps. Yep, that was what my problem was. Called around and found one close. Changed it out and started to bleed the air out of the lines and the stupid pump leaks diesel out around the hand pump. Checked all the fittings and hoses, they were tight. Only seems to leak when you use the hand pump and seems to run great, probaly better than it has it a while, but I figure it leaking can't be good, even if its only when you use the hand pump. Should I make the parts store get me another one and spend another two hours cursing changing it out or just wait and see what happens, it has a life-time warranty.

Re:lift pump troubles
If it leaks out it has the ability to leak the other way I would assume, It is a bummer that some new parts come already broke, but I have came across over the years sadly to say many also. I ran a parts store in High school many years ago,and have kept intouch with the owner and have had several conversations with him and again it is sad to say that some parts company's out there are lacking in quality control. So sorry but we all go thru it sometimes. Goodluck Rick

Re:lift pump troubles
If is is not leaking to the inside, peel the rubber boot off the actuator button, unscrew the packing nut, and go get a NAPA O-ring for 35 cents. Much easier than changing the entire pump again. Take your old O-ring and match it from their universal supply.

Re:lift pump troubles
Thanks for the sugestions RCW, your posts are what pushed me in the direction of changing the pump in the first place. Also you said something in one post about a lift pump leaking diesel back into the block causing alot of dribbling out of the blow-by tube. Mine has been doing this for a couple of weeks and I just assumed it was piston wear, causing alot of blow-by, the truck has at least 312,000 miles on it, most of which have been hard miles. There are no other noticable oil leaks, so maybe this will stop the mess thats been running down the frame rail, on to the back tire and being slung all over the side of the truck.

Re:lift pump troubles
You get more blow by when it's cold also. If you're leaking fuel into the block while parked it usually indicates a bad injector. Most times your oil will smell strongly of diesel and the oil level may increase.
