Lift pump
First I am new to diesels. I just bought a 2001 3500 4x4 6sp. The truck just died twice while I was driving down the road but restarted within a few seconds. The check engine light also came on. I am wondering if a generic OBDII code reader will tell me what the code is 1st or do I need a special code reader? Second from reading I am guessing it could be the lift pump. The truck is all stock but I am planning to order the FASS 150 pump system in the morning along with an intake, exhaust and the Edge A2 or Attitude.

As for the codes TxFireFighter is right just do the key trick it will display the error code in the odometer display.
As for the addition of BOMBs... I would think about getting the Vulcan BIG LINE KIT also. This will improve the cooling to the VP44. There are two version out. The cheap version that Geno's Garage sells which only replaces the fuel line to the filter with 3/8" line -OR- The big line kit from Vulcan Performance that replace everything to the VP44 with 1/2" fuel lines and fittings... No more banjo's with the Vulcan kit. It's worth every penny!
As a side note... You might want to update you signature... It in the UserCP...

Lift Pump
I had a 2000 2500 4x4 which went through 2 lift pumps. It turned out that if the fuel tank got below 1/8 of tank and your driving winding roads or up and down hills the lift pump losses suction. This can also lead to a costly fuel injector failer. when you buy a used diesel vehecle you just dont know if the other owner knew this. It was something I learned the hard way.

I just tried the key trick. I got 1693 and 121. I found 121 is the throttle pedal position out of range I have got no idea what the other one is though. I will be heading over to the dealer to get a new sensor this morning. I will check into the Vulcan kit. What do you mean by "BOMBS"? I will be reading up on here to learn more.
