Wink Lift pump, Smarty and smoke

I learned a couple of things in the last week. This past Friday my lift pump died, P0628. Prior to that, I had what I would describe as a repeated flutter at idle. As many of you have noticed, when your AC compressor engages at idle, your RPM will dip just a little, maybe 50 or less RPM and then return to normal, 750. I started noticing mine would flutter with or without the AC. As I would pull up to a light and push the clutch, the RPM would flutter and dip maybe three or four times before it would finally stabilize. Running with the Smarty, I would have allot of heavy black smoke regardless of the SW selected. I initially removed my TAG (Turbo Air Guide) and the smoke lightened a little.

I got the truck back from the dealer last night. They did the in tank conversion, $0 dollars to me because it was covered by the 5/100 emissions warranty from Cummins. I have not seen any flutter at idle other than AC engagement and the smoke is less than half of what I'm used to seeing with the Smarty. I'm sharing this because I didn't associate this small idiosyncrasies as a possible warning to the impending lift pump failure. Maybe some of you are having similar issues. If you are, getting the supply pressure checked may save you some big bucks.

It's the truth..... I noticed the same thing when mine went south at 23,000 miles.......Whole lot better than the filter mounted pump.

Mikey, I made it to 78,776 before it quit. I had been noticing the flutter for a couple months but never suspected the lift pump was the cause.
