Lift pump failure questions

OK... i've been trying to install a FP gauge on my truck to monitor the lift pump... i'm connecting to the port on the VP44 & not getting any fuel to flow thru the line... i also removed the schrader valve & still no flow... i even connected another gauge in front of the filter and still no reading... when i bump the starter, i can hear the lift pump cycle for 20 seconds or so... truck runs good and mileage is 16-20 MPG... i also noticed when i changed the fuel filter last month that the canister would not fill up after bumping the starter

is there another way to determine my lift pump is toast? or, am i beating a dead horse?

TIA

I think you are not seeing pressure because there is no pressure. If you are not getting any fuel flowing out of the VP inlet port (I would use a needle valve to make sure it can be shut off), this is indeed the sign that your VP is sucking its own fuel, hence no pressure on the suction side.
Replace your LP. Its making noise is no evidence of its pumping anything.

Oh that is a can of worms. By all given rights they should fix it for you but most likely you are going to have to fight for it. Since your VP is not yet dead it would probably be in your best interest to replace the LP yourself with whatever brand/style you choose, as if you do get DC to cover it they are going to insist on the in-tank pump. On that same note if they want to be dinks about it I suppose they could TRY to void the magic 5/100K warranty if you go with a non OEM LP; though you could fight that as well.

First step is to make sure you don't have a bad VP44. If the VP is throwing codes try getting it replaced via the 5/100. One of the things dealerships are famous for is telling you your LP is bad and if they replace it the code for the VP will go away. While this may be the case, the fact remains that if your VP is throwing codes it is a dang good chance the damage has already been done and they are just putting on a band-aid trying to get you past warranty coverage. If it is throwing codes demand a new VP, if it isn't I would save myself the hassle and buy a LP from my local Cummins shop or take the plunge and get an aftermarket kit.
