Is the lift pump replacment in tech facts the same for a 02 as the 00 that is used in the example. I replaced fuel filter, cleaned amess of gunk out of the bottom of the housing then hit the switch my pump came on the 4 times I turned on the switch and then started but then died, pulled filter and.the housing was only about 1/4 full. I filled housing with fuel, replaced filter, but the pump did not come on. After three times turning her over she started and seems to run fine. I shut her down and tried the pump again and it ran the usual 25 or so seconds, I think I need to replace before it messes up the VP. Any thoughts or suggestions, Plain Jane no mods Quad cab 4x4 auto.

when you chance the filter you need to cycle the key and bleed the air from the housing if you are all stock the rear of the housing has a air bleed valve like a tire valve, the pump will not cycle every time the key is turned if you fail to wait 30 sec. to 1 minute between cycles of the key, this is my experiance

bleed air by the banjo bolt on the VP44 when you replace fuel filter. there are 2 banjo fittings on the vp, use the one on the supply line to bleed air. unscrew the fitting a bit and cycle the key to crank 1 or 2 sec(not start, you hear the lp running), when you see fuel came out the banjo bolt screw in again and try to start. I'll do this every fuel filter change on my 99 and work good.

Thanks for the tips, did not know about the valve, need to look for it, but I have 101,700 miles on my orgionale lift pump, and it not filling the housing like it has in the past worries me, because right now I can't afford a VP. Any way thanks for the info, maybe it will help someone else also.

101,000miles are a lot of miles on a LP! I advise you to replace with a new one to ensure the right fuel press to the VP. they are 130to160$ from Cummins but you can find better price on ebay! good luck

If you don't have a gauge on the fuel pressure you need to get one. It doesn't cost that much, and can save the VP. Just because you hear the lift pump doesn't mean it's pumping fuel. I have had 2 of the stock Carters still making noise with no fuel pressure.
