Life of an OEM Injection Pump
With all the info on fuel systems for the Cummins Diesel, how long does the average IP last before it fails? Is there any warning with a failed pump, or do you just try to start it up one morning and you keep cranking? Thanks in advance for the info

80,000 on 1998.5
The truck that I drive at work is a 1998.5 3500 with 80,000ish. Still has the OE VP44. I have replaced weak lift pumps as preventative measure. Stock fuel system with ported banjo bolts. I'm convinced that it has to do with the fact that it has at least a 3/4 to full tank of fuel 85% of the time as wildfire response vehicle. Wish my personnel early build 02 2500 HO would have lasted that long the VP44 went at 48,000 just before it went out of warranty. My 02 started throwing codes then the dreaded dead pedal. Running on the replacement VP now current 58000. Hope i didn't jinx my self.
Work: 1998.5 Ram 3500 4x4, reg cab, SO, NV4500.
Mine: 2002 Ram 2500, 4x4, excab, SB, HO, NV5600, gauges, Smarty,BHAF,
weak clutch, cracked dash

133500 on my original. I have had an AD since 105K and a fuel pressure gauge since 53K miles. Stock lift pump started to get weak and I replaced it with an Airdog. I have used 2 stroke oil since about 90K.

216,000 on mine, but I have an Air Dog lift pump and had been having some starting issues. I believe I have it corrected now the a cutoff relay to the Air Dog when cranking the engine.
Runs great once it is lit, and no IP codes.

At first it was just here and there, but I've let it go on now for far too long. Now, everytime I start her up cold, you can push the pedal through the floor, and the truck will just barely accelerate. Not sure how it feels exactly on an auto, but with my 6 speed, I can shift just right to get it up to the speed limit in a decent amt of time. Now, after it warms up a bit (5-15 minutes), all of a sudden it'll kick in, and throw ya back in the seat. From then on out, it normally drives ok, just every once ina while it kicks back out, and you have no acceleration. Kinda sucks when you need to pass, and you dont know if ya got power or not. Typically I can downshift and overrev her a little bit, and it will kick back, i upshift and pass fine. It is kinda random, for a while, almost every time i would hit about 60 mph it would kick out and slow to about 50, I could play with the throttle and it would take off, hit 60 again, and repeat tghe whole thing the entire trip.

Hamilton,
I jinxed myself too..... Mine died this morning just after startup. Wierd part is that it cranks up fine, but runs on only 2 or 3 cyld. If I put it in gear, all light, but it has a dead peddle. Throwing codes like crazy too. See my relay fix thread for hard starting.
