View Full Version : Leaky Getrag
My Getrag has Leaked since new. I have 150000 on it with no problems. The leak seems to be comming from the top of the transmision. Could this be some kind of seal at the shifter. Is this a pretty easy fix? I have changed the oil once, and very seldom have to add oil. It is just a drip every now and then. I would like to over-fill it but thinking this leak would be made worse by the extra oil.

I don't believe overfilling is going to make a leak from the shifter area any worse...although I could be wrong...
The shifter assy sets on a lip at eh top of the tranny housing itself, so its not like the seam between the two will be submersed or anything..
i would think the benefits of over filling the tranny would outweigh the inconvenience of a leak anyways

It's probably coming from the top cover. Mine sure made a mess over the years.

The only seal I know of at the shifter is the boot which goes over the ball and clamps on the tower. It also seems to be used to keep the 2 screw pins from backing out. Make sure the boot is in good shape and fits tight around the shifter stick.
The only gasket on top is a big one made of paper which seals the whole top shifter assembly to the body of the trans. I have one if you need it.

Just run a bead of Ultra Black RTV Permatex around the cover and put it back together. Works very well and you don't have to worry about getting the gasket on right. You have to pull the trans or cut your floorboard out to do this though.

I just went through this
There is a vent on top that will leak if it is filled too high.

I was a little less than meticulous when I finally got to the cover and a few drops of oil on the driveway now and then are the result. Before I took it apart, I had tried straight synthetic and it leaked more than ever. This was fixed and I am going to run synthetic from now on, even with the slight leak out of the top. Overfilling did not cause a problem AND an iffy pilot shaft bearing race is still hanging in there. Next tear down, I will replace the pilot shaft. It will be nice to get rid of some of the low speed noise.
