Leaking diesel out of pump

so i was driving to work today and i pulled out to pass somebody and when i pulled into work a couple miles later i smelt diesel so i popped the hood and it was gushing fuel from what looked like the block side of the pump. the return runs back there so im gonna check it but is there anything else that could have blown back there. it still runs but leaks terrible bad. i had to tow it home but dont worry it got towed by my dads 96 dodge cummins.

jonathan, i took a look a the exploded parts diag of the VE thats in the sticky and it looks like on the inside of the pump ( between the head and the pump) on the bottom theres a cover plate and an o ring there not sure what they are for. that looks to be in the origin you described.

if you take a look at the diag yourself they are numbers 36 and 39

thanks i just studied the picture of it in the sticky under rump reseal. and i have a reseal kit so i should have the oring. if that oring has ruptured would it leak a LOT of diesel. looking at it while it was running it looked to be coming out of there does anybody know if its possible to get that plate off without removing the pump or do i have to remove the pump. thanks. jonathan

I am pretty sure you have to take the pump off.

what happens is the screws that hold the plate on get lose then the oring pushes its way out. Pump needs to come off to fix. use blue locktite on the screws when you put it back together. Someone may say you can do it on the truck but I dont think it can be done. as for how much fuel they leak out the cover its a lot Ken

well i got the pump off if i had to do it again it would be quicker but i was slow as to not mess anything up and i was learning along the way. i got the pump off and there was a oring trying to escape from under a plate on the backside of the pump you guys were right so a new oring and some loctite and she should be good. when i took the pump off the gasket between the timing case and the pump ripped anuone got a part number on that or should i be able to match it up at napa or something

Just my thoughts....I'd reseal the pump since you have it off. Get yourself a DGK-121 reseal kit and fly at it.

But if your only going to replace that one gasket make sure your careful with the spring and shims that are behind it. They need to go back in the same way they come out. As for the gasket between the pump and case, I just bought a hung of gasket material and used the old one to trace and then cut my own...cost me a couple bucks.
