Last year with the truck, what would you do??
Hey all, it as been a while since I posted on here. I hope this thread is OK on here...... well this will be my last summer with my truck. The lease is up on my girl next year. It will have about 60k on it. Forgive me I leased it as it was the only way I could afford it. Trust me as long as it has a Cummins under the hood, that is what I will drive. I am asking this now incase I decide that I want to turn it in and for a Mega Cab. I would need to save up a few $$$
I love this truck and have dreamed of someday making 13sec 1/4 runs with it. Twin turbos, stacks, etc. ALso thought of painting it orange with a big 01 on the door. After the the 100,000 warranty of course. I am too chicken to fool with warranty issues right now. It has 40k on it now and have never had a problem with it.
We take it 90% of the time with the family. I also use it to haul sound gear as I am a wedding DJ. With the Mega Cab out and how my truck most of the time is the family vehicle, (even though we have a mini van too), the extra room would be nice.
Is that extra room worth it?? I mean the residual would be around (ballpark) $ 13K. I don't think you could get a better vehicle for $13K Thinking of that nice big cab really gets my gears turning though. Even the GM at the dealer I leased it from thinks I should hold on to it. I work in the auto industry but really haven't gotten any answers other than to hold onto it from one person. Anyone else been down this path?? ANy words of wisdom?? Thanks all!

I may not have understood you correctly, but if you're saying you can keep the truck for $13k.....keep it and use the minivan for the family. You'll never find another 02 with that few miles for that price.

Will they let you buy it for residual?
Sometimes residual is only what they'll give you for trade in, selling price to buy it is sometimes much higher.
Some of us (say, ME), still owe almost 12K on the 02s we BOUGHT, so I'd think you're in good shape to keep it.

HOHN, you need more cow bell too????????
Remember fellas I have one more year. It will be a 5 year truck then with est. 60k on it. That is when the lease is up! 2007. With a lease you get nothing when you turn your car in. Yes they let you buy it for the residual. Sometimes you may be able to work with them too. The wife and I lease due to the yearly mileage we drive. She drives maybe 5k a year. I leased so I could get my truck. The bank that you lease from has a lot to do with it too. If they know you want to just take that truck away, they will gladly work with. SO I HAVE BEEN TOLD.
Leasing comp. are weird though. I ran into a mechanic that I see who had a 3rd gen 1500 4x4 standard cab. Over 10K on it. He got a call asking if he would turn in his current lease for a new quad cab with the 20" wheels, everything,4x4,etc for the same price as his current truck but he would just have to pay tax, title and tags.
Thanks guys for any advice.

Keep it...If a mega cab is all that you are after, look into stretching the current vehicle. With the money that just saved you over a new truck again, Get ya some more fun toy's, and horsepower, and you will be much happier in the long run.

If, by that time the new Cummins is out, you might want to stay away for that reason. I'm pretty wary of the first year with a new engine. Just look at the other brands.

You've got to remember about the overall mileage too.
With 60k estimated mileage on it when you turn it in, a LOT of things are going to need replacing soon, if not before;
ball joints
track bar
tires
brake pads
lift pump
injection pump (maybe)
So, you pay $13K to keep a smaller(to you) truck with maintenance items to buy too, or go out and lease a new bigger truck with a 3 year maintenance warranty.
Then you figure in things like; poor fuel economy with new generation '07 emissions engine, Mega Cab only offered in shortbed, driveline vibrations, etc.
Your decision...
My '01 is paid for, is set up the way I like/need, and I'm keeping it even though I could use a dually. Dodge has cheapened the truck too much these last few years for me to go out and buy a new one.
