Laptop Programmer???
With all of the programs out there for tuning up those little rice burners, I'm a little surprised to not see one for diesel trucks. Does anyone know of any programs?
Thanks,
Sean

Yes, I am very interested in this as well.
A while back, I found some information on the Cummins site on two different programs. I think one was quick link II or something like that, and the other I cant recall. The information made it seem like those programs worked on electronically controlled cummins EXCEPT, the dodge rams.........
I am looking forward to hear about any information others on this site may have on this subject....

I am very curious to find out more about this programmer... Still though, I would have thought that there would be something out there specifically for these trucks. I wonder how many computer programmers frequent this site? How could we assemble a team to develop a program to tune these truck? Ahhh, so many questions... so little space.

Didn't TST get sued by dodge for their reprogrammed ecms?

Does anyone know if there is a way to reverse engineer one of the programmers? It would be interesting to find out if it was possible to get the program onto a laptop. Then you could possibly modify it further... but I'm getting ahead of myself here. What format does OBD-II use for data transmission? I assume that it is totally standardized, as OBD-II is a standard itself. If it were possible to somehow figure out how to decrypt the code. Anyway, I'm still searching the internet, looking for someone who has already done it... I will post something if I find it.

I was talking at dinner with a friend tonight, who is also a big cummins fan like us. He said something about a guy he saw at a truck pull here in Indiana like a yr ago that had a laptop in his truck that he was using while he was pulling. I dunno how true it is, to me it is only hear say.

Of course there have been guys that have "cracked the code"! They work at Superchips, Hypertech, MADS Electronics, etc. I wouldn't think that these guys would help us out with a PC based program though.... Thinking back, wasn't the DiabloSport Power Puck available with an RS-232 connection under the cover and there was "tuning" software available to the dealers for fine tuning the Puck to suit the drivers preference??? IIRC, there was a magazine article that talked about this when they first came out.
There are kits out there for reprogramming your ODB II vehicles. These are designed primarily for the Auto Service industry to install or update PCMs. I don't think that they have any tuning capabilities, at least, not for CTD trucks.
I wonder if the guys at MADS would be interested in helping us out with a PC based tuning program for CTDs. They are bound to have the capabilities, but looking at things from their perspective, what would stop one person from buying the program and tuning all his buddies trucks. Not very good for the old profit margin. I think that DiabloSport was on the right track with the Power Puck... a necessary adapter (the Puck) that serves as the tuning port (the RS-232) for the program and, I assume, the EPROM or EEPROM for the programming. Each end user would at least have to buy the adapter to be able to utilize the tuning program. There would have to be a profitable aspect for them to even consider something like this....

The best reason i can think of for producing a program like the one hinted at above is that profit should be easily recognized. That is, once the software has been written, it costs nothing to distribute it. True, you could tune your buddies trucks... but how long will it take before you get sick of "adjusting" their programming and they are forced to go and buy the software themselves? I would like a laptop tuner not to tune vehicles for others, but for the limitless possibilities offered by such a device. Imagine how many parameters you could change. Far more than you could with a handheld tuner, I would think. Sure there are ways around any system to "steal" someone's product. But if the product delivered enough value, and people thought they were getting a hell of deal, then they should be happy to shell out the cash for it. That's basic marketing. Of course there are always outliers, people who would try to rip it off even it was only a dollar. That's just my two cents... and I would really like to see something of this nature in the future.

I know for a fact that there are such programs. My truck was tuned with one. I live in kokomo, IN if you want the guys info PM and we will let him know. He charges a small fee for doing this, but highly worth it. Ben
