Have you ever heard a souped up tractor trailer when its accelerating hard from a stop, going through the gears? As he is coming off the throttle between gears, you hear a loud pshhhh of air at every shift. It sounds awesome! The other day I was next to an 01 or 02 Dodge 24valve 5 or 6spd at a stoplight and when he took off, you could hear the same sound in between shifts. I think its called a blowoff valve, not sure. I don't expect to get any performance gains, but I've heard it might help the turbo. A lot of us take pride in the loud exhausts on our trucks and I'd love to add this mod. Any ideas?

What you were probably hearing was turbo bark. If you let off the throttle too quickly, the turbo actually tries to spin backwards which in the long run can snap the shaft inside your turbo. I drove a number of trucks that would bark the turbo between shifts if you let off the throttle too fast. As far as a blow off valve in your dodge, I'm not sure. I just know that I have never seen a blow off valve in a highway truck.

Neither of those are BOV's. Open up the intake and exhaust on your Cummins and it'll make those sounds too. Mine does. Sound will be easier to hear with a stack.

Over here in Eastern Ky, the coal trucks are everywhere and you hear that sound all the time. It sounded cool coming from a Dodge 24v just like mine. I wish I could have asked that guy what he did to his Cummins.

an aftermarket turbo also make a big difference. it's hard to explain but it's almost like my turbo "growls" between shifts. sounds really cool when i'm getting into it.

mine too. try removing the silencer ring off the inlet of the turbo. and get an aftermarket intake. your truck does it if you reaching close to 20 psi you just may not hear it because your inside the truck

Also, it is more defined when you go from WOT to completely off the throttle.

Brianpgriset, is there a search word I can use on youtube to pull up those videos you posted? I have already removed the silencer ring & the turbo whistle is pretty loud, but that's not the sound I'm talking about. Its like a high pitched release of air, hard to describe but unmistakable when you hear it. I see souped up Dodges all the time, but only saw the one that had this sound.

mine with the silencer ring out and aem filter will make this noise your talking about if you just floor it when u shift let off the throttle quick and it sounds like a blow off valve...i have had people ask me if thats whats on it....it sounds good, i deff wouldnt waste the money to put one on..

I hear it on trucks that have straight exhaust all the time. I don't hear it on 3rd gens just on 1st and 2nd gens.

Thanks for the replies. I've been in a parking lot 100 yards from the road and easily hear that whoosh on every gear from a semi. I guess it helps to have a huge Caterpillar engine to get that sound.

Honestly to get to those videos I've just spent countless hours searching words like "Cummins", "hood stack", etc.... and followed the related videos on the right hand side.

I didn't search one particular word to get those 3, but I remembered them cause they sound so dang good.
