I've done quite a few and have never bothered removing the shroud. But then again I have the correct wrenches to remove the fan and don't have to grind wrenches either. The fan will come out without removing the shroud.

I used the tst kit, and with the directions, I had no trouble. I also replaced the cover gasket, but many will reuse the existing one. Only issue I had was lossening the harmonic bal. bolts. But advice found here led me to use a long bar with a straight edge & wedge it into the slot and the ground so the bolts lossen. good time to replace the belt, hoses, rad. fluid too.

Bad...
I followed the TST instructions, except for a couple things...
I believe TST instructions say to remove the washer tank, the radiator overflow tank, and shroud...to allow you to remove the fan and mount assembly. Don't do all that!
Hit the corner of the 36mm. (1-7/16") nut just behind the fan with a long punch and hammer...usually a couple hits, and it will be loose. It is left hand thread, so hit the driver's side of the nut. Then just remove the fan from the pulley, and push it up against the cardboard, TST recommends putting behind the radiator, and bungee cord it there...no need to remove the shroud or fan. There will be plenty of room to work.
Then, take off the belt, the fan pulley, and then the fan mount.
Other then that modification to their instructions...everything else was right on. Pay particular attention to their instructions on the crank seal...the seal must be installed dry...don't use any oil/grease on the seal or crank.

I did my KDP two months ago. I did not remove the fan shroud or the fan. I was able to unbolt the fan and lift it towards the top of the radiator and hang it there. No issues with getting the front cover off or back on......
