Kdp

I wanna fix my KDP befor eit fixxes my budget on my 91.5. I went to the sticky but the link is dead. When I lost the kdp on my 98 it busted the gear housing and went to dodge to be repaired (under warranty).

My question is about a jig to do this without removing the cover; There used to be a jig running around where you could just drill a hole and tap it to run a bolt into the kdp and snug her back down.

Does anyone have a jig? Any bad advice about the jig method? It looks like Faith has killed a ton of em.

hey-Hey!!!,
I don't like the idea of drilling the gear housing to block the KDP. There is at least as much risk from loosened bolts hiding under there as from the KDP. Pull the cover, install a tab with a longer bolt, a new seal and re-torque/locktite the gear housing bolts hidden under the cover.
cheers,
Douglas

True, I guess I could retorque those bolts too.......I just dont wanna take that cover off. Why dont you like like the idea; Im just asking because I am curious. Is it just the thought of loosened bolts or the new bolt loosening up and allowing the kdp to fall out?

When the timing case bolts loosen they go into the cam gears and can cause just as much damage as the kdp.

It is a combo; first, there is no way to get all the chips out if you drill. Then there are the bolts; they're as big a risk( at least ) as the KDP so why bother doing only part of the job and leave the really risky stuff undone? Look at KDP posts; most say the KDP had not moved; I've not seen any that said all their bolts were tight...
cheers,
Douglas

Bill, Douglas

Thanks for the info. I failed to consider the shavings from drilling also. I will pull the cover like you guys reccomend. What would happen if someone removed the kdp completely? I think I understand its purpose for engine assembly but my engine is fully assembled so why do I even need it in there?

I would only take it out if it's about to fall out, because it would be more trouble than it's worth to get it out. Also, if you ever do need to disassemble the engine, the pin will be right where it belongs ...IMHO...Mark

It was my understanding you should not remove it because it helps locate the case on the block. I believe I read it in DP..

there are plenty o' threads on neutralizing the dowel pin, but as mentioned loc-tire all of the bolts in that timing cover -- you'll be amazed how loose some of them are!

First gen Dowel pins aren't as big of a threat as 2nd gen's... But, the timing case bolts are a threat. And the 1st gens are a lot easier too work on too!
