Bummer Mike. :-[

Good thing it didn't take out the plethora of other gears in the gear case.

So, Did you slide a Cam in it while you were there :P ?

You mkae it sound like you are allready back on the road? Is the truck still running good?
Does your truck still have dowel pin? or is an empty hole now?

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

no dowel pin on the top, i forgot to get a new one at the cummins house. it took all day friday and a half a day saturday to get it back together. not to bad, but a bunch of work.
i would have loved to put in a cam while i had it tore down, but i don't have the bucks right now. i think i will just buildup the other 215 motor that i have and take my time buying up parts. i just spent a hour reading about p7100 pumps and rack travel trying to pick up some free ponys. it is back on the road now, and i have to haul 18k plus tommorow so it as good as new. i did have a wooden dowel rod that snaped off and cost me a hour or 2 to get out. and that lower injector pump nut is a sob. mike

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

I might as well ask now... My wifes 95 12v and my 96 12v both still have the the KDP un-fixed. Can you give me a run down on what has to be taken off/done and a summary of tools to do so. I know that's asking alot but I have two trucks to do! I'm a mechanic for a living so it will envolve me bringing home boxes of tools I'm sure. I will appreciate it a lot.

I got the seal and gasket to do mine with tis weekend. The guy I got it from thought it had been done but I want to see for myself. I will sleep or drive easier knowing it has been done.

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

Finally got around to doing mine this weekend - used the drill, tap and blocking bolt installation method on the case. The pin had not moved. Thanks Mike (DH) for all the advise and the use of your broke part to come up with the measurements on where to drill and tap.

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

well we tore into 2 of my friends trucks this saturday afternoon. the 96 with 300k plus on it was fine, the dowel pin had never moved, the 94 with 150k was way out. i hit it with the tap when i way threading the hole. we tried to push it back in with a punch, but it would not budge. we used a bottoming tap and had to sharpen the bolt tip to get infront of it. mike

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

I cannot believe cummins or dodge did not take resposibility for this problem?? My 94 was way out too! I was tabbing it anyway, and it was still hard to get back in,I did not have to hit it real hard, but harder than I thought it should of taken, good deal on helping your bud's, I tell everyone I come into contact with that is driving a dodge ctd about it and some are like, so what, and some go in and repair and have found out they are indeed moving out,I just could not take the risk, goodluck Rick

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

I read somewhere that the new gear housings, you end up buying when the pin decides to try and find a new home, have a tappered hole that won't allow the pin to work itself out. Just wondering, since it cost me a small fortune about four years ago, to have the housing replaced and would rather not have to have it replaced or replace it myself. If this isn't true I be doing it soon! Also, do the first gens have the same problems?

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

Darloa, they did change the housing's sometime I think in 2000,someone correct me if I am wrong, also there have been some found on the 2000's,If I understood your question, you have already had a failure? And it has been repaired,if so cummins did send a TSB out to the dealers about the tab repair and even issued a tab for there TSB,That I will call a mistake on their part and should of been recalled, and if for any reason a mech. is in the area for any reason to do the tab method while they are in there,so hopefully they did this for you,if not and for your pocket book, I would check with whoever repaired yours and make sure if they did,if not let me know and I will send you the info to do the repair yourself, also yes they do affect the 1st gen's too. Let us know and there is help and info available,I am in choctaw Ok,not to far from you, Goodluck, Rick

Re:KDP strikes again, and again

Hi guys, This KDP has cost many a lot of money. After reading some of the posts I had my local Cummins authorized repair center "Scheid Diesel Services" perform the fix last year. That worry is long gone now and the total bill was $150. Scheid told me KDP failure may cost anywhere from $1,200 to $8,000, depending on whether the cam gets bent or not, and how hard the engine was working. They have actually seen cracked/broken blocks. For those that are still young and wish to do the work themselves, this link details the operation: Killer Dowel Pin fix procedure
