It is a dowel pin in the front timing case that houses the cam, pump, crank, and oil pump gears. If the pin falls out(which it is known to do), it can bust the gears, and the case. In order to remove the aluminum housing that can bust, you have to pull the cam out, which is a lot of work. If you fix it ahead of time, it can be done in about 2 hours with less than $70 in parts. You just have to pull the cover off the timing case, drive the pin all the way back in, and either make, or buy a tab to put over top of the bolt. Get this done ASAP! I was well aware of what could happen and didnt fix mine. It fell out about 3 weeks ago! Didnt tear up a single thing, but man did I get lucky. It is now back in and tabbed now. This is the noise mine made when my KDP fell out:

I didnt know what it was at the time of the video, or it definately wouldnt have been running!

I spent this past weekend tabbing the KDP on my '98. It was still tight in the hole and hadn't moved, but now it is tabbed and can't cause harm. It took me longer than 2 hours, but I work pretty slow and take my time. Installing the new crank seal was the toughest part of the project for me.
I recommend that you pull the radiator to provide more access. While it's out, you can clean it with compressed air and water. You won't believe the amount of dirt you'll get out of the fins by doing this.
