I'am ready to reinstall the parts after I tabed the pin......205,000 miles on ...it was out about 1/8inch....Now I know the "Feeling" some of you had, while knocking it back IN and..yelling "Die Die Die..kdp" !! lol ...anyway I got the $48.00 "Kit" and ..here is my question.. Do you use the RTV sealer "In Place" of the OEM metal, timing gear housing gasket??? My darn parts person said there is NO gasket for the case..and I find no mention about it anywhere...thanks for the repley....

I have seen two different kits for this. One had a cover gasket "move than $48.00" and one didn't. When i checked mine I just used RVT. I got the $48.00 kit also. Take your time putting the front main seal in.

Congrats on killing the beast! I used RTV. Make sure everything is clean and oil free so the RTV can stick good. I did not use the front seal guild that comes with the kit. I could not figure it out. I just lined up the case very carefully and slipped the seal over the crank shaft. Put a little motor oil on the crank & seal for lube.

every thing i have read said NOT to have any oil on the seal area of the crank as there is suppose to be some sort of teflon on there to transfur to the shaft to seal it ????

did you use a cummins brand of seal , and how long has it been on ?

First time, I used the RTV in the kit, it leaked. I'm sure it was just my bad installation. So then I got a gasket from Cummins (3918673) and no more leak. I did the timing while I was there the second time.

Others love RTV, but I'd use the gasket over RTV any day.

Yes use no oil on the crank seal, it is clearly written on there, there is an installation tool provided with the seal kit, just follow the instructions. The TST kit even has nice color instructions. Mine has been on there for several thousand miles no leaks.

mine's been on for awhile with no leaks, I just used the RTV. Make sure u clean both mating surfaces so theres no residue at all and u'll be good to go. The clear plastic guide that comes with the seal was kinda confusing at first, but put it on the inside of the cover as u put it on, and it gets pushed out the front as you slide the cover and seal on the engine.

Wildmanben cleaned cover with brake cleaner and then put RTV on timing case and then gasket over that. 2,000 miles and no leaks.

I went to Cummins and picked up a gasket. I just dig on gaskets over RTV. It was about 20 bucks and well worth it in my mind.

Gaskets are easier to remove, especially on an aluminum part. It would be too easy to gouge the aluminum case trying to clean the RTV if you ever pull the cover again. But its totally personal preference.

Yes, the seal goes on DRY with the special sleave. You can even line up the seal slightly off of the old running surface on the crank if you want to have it start on a fresh piece of steel. There is enough room on the cover to slide the seal in or out just a tad for a new running surface.

I have 25,000 miles on mine since I did it. No leaks at all with the grey RTV that was in the TST kit. The seal is easy, just follow the directions.

Check out a product called hylomar 808. It is a sealer that never hardens. It is to be used ALONG with the gasket. It's a tachy blue paste (comes in a tube). Takes a few minutes longer to apply than just using a gasket, but I have never had any leaks period when I use it. Removal is easy and often times gaskets can be re-used.

It does not get hard so if you use to much and some gets into the engine, it will not block oil passages. Resists oil, gas, diesel. The only thing that really removes it is stuff like brake clean, acetone, lacquer thiner, etc.

Great for trans pans when changing out fluid. The gasket comes off clean, the old hylomar wipes off easy and the gasket surfaces have no gasket residue. Been using it for about 20 years now. Very happy with it. Great thread sealant as well. No I don't sell it. Just use it every time I am messing with gaskets. Makes life easier in the long run. Oh, and I hate silicone sealer. KD

I personally know of two '99s that suffered pin cracked gear cases.

I feel like such a Newb asking this. But is there a way to check for it without removing the cover, can i look in the breather hole.

..Well its all put together...and now I can offically add it to my signiture..lol I went with an aftermarket metal timming cover gasket, since three dealers did not have one in stock.yea the RTV sealer would have been ok..but I chose the gasket route....it was an fairly easy job..but had some frustrations..the fan blade "Nut" would not come loose..so I took the hole bracket off with the blade ..I bought an engine barring tool right from cummins..about $38.00..it works choice..!! Holds the engine from turning over....(By the way the barring tool goes into the hole on the passanger side of the engine..Remove the round silver dollar size..plastic black "plug" ....mine was very hard and dry.. it took alot to remove it)well logic and common sence took over..and as long as I had it apart..some things I also did,as was to replace upper and lower radiator hose's ..replaced the water pump with a NAPA rebuilt for $41.00, and put on a new belt and automatic tensioner..aahhh piece of Mind...lol ...thanks to all, and this great site !!!
