kdp got me! now what?

for those of you that thought that the KDP didnt exist. G.T.F.O.
I am seriously in shambles over this.
I never heard of kpd, until discovering these forums now I find, one of the previous owners had the KDP fail on my rig. and somebody welded the pin to the cover after it took two teeth off the cam gear, and sealed the oil leak with silicone!! this is ignorance to me. now that I was planning to tab the KDP this weekend I am aw struck after finding this kind of repair.I have put 47,000 mile on this rig, since my purchase. and some mechanics(2)have told me to put it back together and run it with the two teeth missing. I dont see eye to eye with these guys and want to replace the cam gear. please help me with parts sources, and cost please.
thanks

Well first of all who ever did the repair and did not tell you about it does not live by the basic spirit of this website. You won't find that here. However, some people can justify anything...

Do a search here under KDP. There is a lot on it and there is also a link to a good description/w pics showing how to replace the items on your truck.
Good luck and don't let one jackass ruin your day.
Considering your truck runs fine as it is why not let it be? I know its not great knowing your CTD is not whole, but it has served well. Not trying to talk you out of the repair, but its a pretty big job.

The proper fix would be to replace the gear and the timing case. It's gonna be very expensive if you don't do it yourself. Cummins can get you the parts.

As long as it's not two teeth right next to each other I would put it back together and run it unless cost is no object.

I am trying to finish mine now. As for cost the housing was $220, various seals and o rings brought the total to $420? or so. Cam gear was $205 and the cummins dealer here pressed it for nothing(after spending $620 I thought that was nice). I was a little scared at first to do it myself(even though I have a degree in diesel tech) because it has been 6 or 7 years since I had been in side an engine. It isn't to bad to do yourself if you have another vehicle to drive for a day or two. The how to do they mentioned says to use dowel to hold up lifters. I used 12 pencil magnets and they worked out pretty good. One thing you will want to look out for that is biting me in the butt right now and holding the project up is the timing pin for the cam gear. You have to remove it from the old housing and install it on the new one. I would suggest not tightening it all the way until you have the pin in the cam gear. I tried to line it up using the wear marks the screws made on the pin holder and snugged them up. Now I can't get the pin to line up and the screws are so tight I can't get the lower screw(Almost imposible to get any leverage on) loose enough to slide it around. I hope this helps and I would fix it the right way if you can because missing teeth on the cam gear is going to seriously screw with your timing if not now eventually. If you have any more ?'s let me know and I would be glad to share more of my experiance.

Thought it would never happen to me, (had 376,000 miles on my 97 when I did the kdp and it was still a-ok) but then I learned it doesn't matter what your mileage is, kdp can go out at anytime. At around 78k started going through a quart of oil every 3 days on my 98, so i knew I was screwed. The dowel pin was totally gone but thankfully the Cam gear was ok, however it cracked timing case in 2 places. Not a fun job, somewhat time consuming.
