I just went to a cummins parts shop and bought the crank seal and the timing cover gasket. I just found a schematic on google pics for the tab, it's super easy to make and way cheaper.

sounds good. I'll see if I can figure something out. Noone else sells those kits that I could get ahold of? I'm afraid I'm going to have to order the seal and if I have to order that then i might as well order the kit. the kit was cheaper than the seals I priced.

The last time I checked with Cummins, they had a KDP tab kit.. The bolt and tab for about $25. Plus the gasket and front seal it was closer to $100 all tolled, not cheap..

I did the KDP on my '98 recently. I got a Felpro gasket and seal kit from one of the local big-name auto parts stores. It came with a crank seal, installation tool and plastic sleeve and both timing case gaskets even though you only need the cover gasket (hopefully!). I ground a tab out of whatever I could find laying around and used the original bolt with locktite.

Felpro gasket set part numbers:

TCS46001 is listed as 1994-1998.
TCS45902 is listed as 1988-1996.

good luck

Grind a fender washer on a bench grinder to fit. Sorta shaped like a guitar pick with a hole.

Or you could bend up some heavy hanger wire or light welding rod as such ~

And install just as the so called Tab.

Some simply peen the metal adjacent to the pin hole.

--> Don't forget to check/tighten to case bolts while you're in there.

When the KDP lets loose it will make a $100 look like pocket change.

Sorry Dave, I don't mean to rain on your parade, but peening only works on the 1st gen cases, the 2nd gen ones don't have any material there to peen. The pin will sit flush with the case when all the way in. However, checking the case bolts is a really good idea.

Here's what it looks like,

My tab,

Tab in place,

JD730, I am totally behind the cost and repair.. Its just there are alot of complete kits out there with everything you need for less than Cummins is willing to sell to you..

Its funny that years ago in my PowerBoosters letter from Cummins, they dispelled the KDP as a myth. But now you can purchase the bolt and tab from them????Hmmmm..

I got my tab from cummins $1.12, got my crank seal and gasket maker from napa $32 and $8, would have got it all from cummins, but napa was about $10 cheaper and 2 blocks down the street.

I made the tab and bought the felpro gasket and seal set you can get it at any parts store($55) and I would rather use a gasket over RTV sealant any day nothing worse than doing something twice.

Yeah I agree but I need a speedy sleeve. I'll build the tab. I also would like some torque specs on all of the bolts.
