The KDP and a question

I have read enough about the KDP to make me scared. I bought a '89 Dodge for the engine and trany for my project, but I don't know much of the history on the truck. Is there any way to know if the problem has already been taken care of short of pulling the timing cover off? I don't really want to tear into the engine, but I don't want to wish I would have. Can you see the problem child through the oil fill spout if you remove it and use a mirror through the hole?

I have read somewhere that the KDP isn't an issue on the 89 engine but I plan to do it eventually. I'm going to wait for a cooler day however.

After removing the oil fill spout, all you can see is the injector pump gear, which is large and right up against the cover.

I have a 6BT I pulled out of a 93 F600, (don't tell my Dodge it's new engine came from a Ford) when I tore it down for rings and bearings and Piers cam install, it did not have an alignment dowel pin, is this a Dodge only thing?

I think in later years Cummins made the timing housing with a blind hole for this reason.

Russian Roulet is still Russian Roulet. The dowel pin is an issue from '89 through '98.5. Not only that but the 5 bolts inside the outer cover that hold the front gear case cover to the the engine are also an issue. I've seen the results of the dowel pin comming out and/or one of the bolts comming out - cam broken into 3 pieces, 6 bent push rods and 3 broken lifters. It's about a 4 hour job to pull the front cover and take cars of the problem and who knows how long to fix the resultant damage caused by ignoring it.

Tab it and be sure, it is not worth it to leave it and hope it will not fall out.

My pin had not moved, but I'm glad I did it. With the engine in the truck it only took me about an hour to do it, and that includes making the ultra-high-tech coathanger tab and bolting it on

I personally know of a Ford medium duty truck with a 5.9 that had the KDP come out and do damage. Don't recall what year it was though. Maybe that was the difference. Looks like Dodge owners aren't the only "lucky" ones.
