KDP and Crank Seal Questions

Will be tabbing ther dowel pin this weekend. Couple of questions:

The crank seal has the seal, the plastic seal starter sleeve, the seal driver, and another item that I'm not sure as to what it is. Looks like some type of seal, black rubber coatedround ring. What is it and where does it go??

Next question, of course Cummins did not have the little .96 cent tab, so when making my own, is there a bend in the tab? From the pics that I have seen it looks like the bolt that holds the tab stands proud. Or in other words, there is a step down from the bolt surface to the dowel surface (if that makes sense).

Any other tips and advice are welcome pleeeze! Thanks, Kevin

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

Not sure what your talkin about with your seal kit.
I guess I would have to see it.
but for the tab go to your local hardware store and get a fender washer and put it to a grinder to make it fit the conture of the cover.
It will fit under a bolt fight beside it [ 3/8 washer I think ]
just remember to use thread locker when reinstalling the bolt.

I received the same set up as you did. I called Cummins West and he told me that black seal can be put on after the seal or you can junk it. It seems that they use it if there is a real dust and dirt problem. I don't have that but I put it on anyway. The sharp end goes in. Maccandy

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

Something you can try is when you pull the damper off is clean the crank and put some oil on the crank. Then pull the cover off carefully. After you tab the KDP, lube the crank again and carefully slide the cover back on. By doing so you shouldn't need the new seal and be able to get a refund on it.

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

I did the crank seal at the same time I did the KDP also. Unless you really have to put the seal on I wouldn't, IT IS THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE YOU KNOW WHAT THAT I'VE EVER HAD TO DO!!! It took me 2+ hours to get it on. That of course after I ripped the plastic starter and almost tearing the seal.

P.S. Be extremely careful with the seal.

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

Thanks for al the great info, now I think I'm more confused. I have been reading other posts here and on other sites, and so much conflicting info.

Some say the seal is no big deal, some say it's a bugger (like here). I have read a few posts that state "I just pressed it on using a vice with no problem" others state "no problem just using a block of wood and the seal driver that came in the kit".

I have also read that the seal needs to go onto the crank dry. The plastic sleeve is there to protect the seal when sliding it on the crank, and then upon initial start (after plastic sleeve i removed) a small amount of teflon is deposited onto the crank. One person really stressed that the crank needs to be very clean and free of oil.

While on the subject of the seal, if I understand things correctly, it is installed from the inside of the cover towards the outside??? I have read that it can be installed both ways, but am I correct in thinking that it is easier while the cover is off from the inside out? I sure could use a little more info on the seal install.

Thanks for the info on the make your own tab, it was my after dinner project this eve. I just need to put 2 coats of primer, then my paint, wet sand and then a couple coats of clear and the tab will be all done. On second thought, maybe I should have it chromed??

Ok momentary lapse of reason, anyways, the last discrepency is the black thin seal thingy, I have actually read that some say it is an oil slinger and should be slipped on before putting the cover on (the cover with the newly installed seal), BUT if I am understanding things correctly, it gets put on just after removing the plastic protecor sleeve (after the cover with the seal is in place), but prior to putting the damper back on??? It makes sense that it's just an optional dust seal.

The most common complaint I have read about doing the KDP fix is the fan. I ave been itting it with pen. oil and I made a tool to hold the pulley while I wrench on the nut so I am hoping that will at least go smoothly. Thanks, guys, Kevin

I put the seal on dry and now have many uncomplicated miles on it. You should have no problem with the fan, at least I didn't. Hope it goes good.

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

I just did this yesterday. The seal will go in easily from the inside out- it has a pretty good taper on the inside of the cover. Use loctite on the O.D. of the seal and tap it in with the metal tool until the tool bottoms on the cover. Making sure the plastic gizzy is clean, put it back in the seal, large O.D. towards the inside. Clean the crank like you were going to eat off of it- alcohol will leave it oil free (not beer) Install the cover by starting the plastic gizzy on the crank, center the cover and push it it into place. Once you get all the bolts in and tight, remove the plastic sleeve. The thin wiper seal goes in with the flat side out- towards the pulley. Thats it!! I used an old section of serpentine belt and vise grips to hold the fan (remember, it comes off clockwise) . Good luck, Jim

Re:KDP and Crank Seal Questions

I used a 1 7/16" (I think) open end wrench and hit it with a hammer (cw) a couple times to break the fan loose. Came off easy. When I installed the cover, I put the seal install tool in the cover to line it up until I had a couple bolts done up. No leaks yet in a year and a half. One thing I would do different next time is to install the seal in the cover before I put it on. It was a real female dog to do from under the truck. Good luck.
