I'm sure this has been addressed but I couldn't find it. Im considering a drop in K&N air filter but am wondering if the benefit justifies the $80 local price. I have used them in the past primarily for their filtration benefits in dusty environs. My 01 is a 99% pavement truck that is about to head out on a long, (4000+) mile road trip and I'm wondering if there is any noticeable mileage or power benefit that I might see as a result of dropping in the K&N.

Also wondering if an exhaust change is worthwhile, mine is totally stock right now and I don't want to go crazy, and I certainly don't want more noise (I take enough crap over the stock noise level)

I run K&N filters on my normally aspirated engines with good results (.i.e. no build-up of dirt/crud in the intake tract)

I used a K&N drop in on my Cummins for a short period of time, until I kept seeing dirt/dust/crud in the intake on my turbo.

Then I switched to a Scotty System and an UNI 2-stage filter.
No more crud.

I wasn't going to use one but the truck came with it and the tube past the filter was so clean I continued to use it. ED

Thanks guys, I guess nobody is seeing anything one way or the other as to benefit to mileage or power and they generally do what they are supposed to

Performance wise, gains are minimal. I ran a K&N for about a year. I saw no improvements in mpg. Maybe a little quicker spool up. Started seeing a little oil inside turbo inlet so I got rid of it. Now I'm using an Amisol nanofiber filter. I'm happy with it. FWIW, I never cleaned the K&N, so oil was not from improper cleaning.

I saw a nice increase in boost and a pretty good drop in EGTs when I switched from stock to a drop in.

I've got a stock air filter in mine now but the guy I bought it from gave me a k&n drop-in that I have yet to clean/re-oil and use. I was all excited about it until someone pointed out that, even with a better filtration system, more airflow probably means more dirt and the first thing it hits is your turbo.

I'll probably give it a shot and see what happens, but I'd rather take a slight decrease in performance than risk grinding up my turbo

Definitely interested in other brands to consider, as I'm sure k&n isn't the be-all end-all of air cleaners. Eventually I want to do a full cold-air anyway

here is a link done by a couple guys over on the GM website it used a duramax as a test, results for K&N were not positive.

my own opinion is oiled filters get sucked dry, some claim they dont, each to his own I guess
