Just about to take my 96 CTD in to have

the oil changed and the fuel filter(s) swapped out, which raises the first question--how many fuel filters are there on this thing, and where are they? If there are more than one, should they all be swapped out every time?

I had noticed some (slight) surging at highway speeds on my way across the country a few weeks ago, but it only occurred above 2000 rpm. Folks on this forum said it was probably a dirty fuel filter, and since I have no idea when the previous owner last swapped it out, it seems like a likely thing to try.

1 fuel filter located behind the pump on the engine. Its beside the brake booster on the engine side. Kinda a pain to change but once you do it 1 or more times you figure it out.

There's also a screen in the fuel pre-heater (located in front of the fuel pump) that can get clogged. You can check/clean it and use re-use the O-ring seal if you're careful taking it apart.

Id be more inclined to change the prefilter - it may never have been cleaned/changed:

There is also a fine screen in the fuel tank bringing the total to three.

Hey, thanks a LOT for the links to

the instructions on how to do that stuff, and the tips about the prefilter screen/strainer and the tank screen. Don't think we will get into the tank screen just now, but the other one will be replaced unless it appears to have been swapped out recently.

Quite a difference on the parts prices dodge vs. cummins/Fleetguard. Yikes!

Thanks again
