just put deposit down on a 96 w/120k but has a rattle

I finally found a good deal on a used diesel work truck to replace my 89 (A strong motor but at 280k the truck is coming apart around it. I drove the 96 for the first time today and will pick it up in a few days. I noticed when under acceleration there is a rattling noise coming from either the dash area or the motor itself. It does it in all gears including neutral. I was hoping somebody might know what this is and if it is something I should be worried about. The only changes from stock that I could see are a BHAF, missing muffler and resonator and a rebuilt tranny (from the gasket goo squeezed out between the tranny and T-case) Any ideas? The truck seems like an excellent deal (10,900 for a 96 Laramie CC, Auto, 4x4, long bed w/120k) but dont want to get hung out to dry. Thanks,
John

I've got a 95 and have also test drove several in this year range. On the next test drive, when you get on it try pushing the transfer case shifter forward slightly and see if the rattle goea away, mine did.

Generally speaking, unless the vechile has a known hsitory or if there is any question whatsoever on a vechile, I have a buyer's check done on it prior to making an offer. This is exactly the reson why. $100 now could save you thousands later. I would take it to a reputable shop and have it looked over, rattles are very difficult to determine thier source. If you do not it will just annoy you as long as you own the truck. If they find something wrong, get your deposit back or factor that into the final price. $10k for a '96 without a rattle is quite high, even with only 120k.

Did you carfax the VIN number on this truck?

96_12v - I just bought my 94 12v 4x4.....I searched high and low for it. 10k for a 96 cc 4x4 lb is going rate for dealers around here. These trucks are a hard find up here in the northeast. Scary, isnt it?

Wow. That is high, I suppose there are just not as many of them up there. May I suggest looking on Autotrader or ebay in Texas? Just make sure to contact the seller first to insure it's not a scam.

I usually see that year range going for 8.5-10K in my area. The 12V seems to hold value better than the 24V due to it's simplicity and reliability.

I had an issue with my dash rattling when I drove my truck home. It would stop if I put my hands on the face of the dash so I knew what caused it.

When you drive it again, see if you can eliminate the possibility of the dash by putting pressure on the interior panels.

10k was actually the lowest Ive found for that particular vehicle anywhere. most I found around here from dealers AND private sellers was averaging 12-14k for vehicles with even more miles than this. Just for fun I ran a search of 2500's in a 300 mile radius around Austin TX. The cheapest came in at 15,993 with 128k on it. And almost all of them were 2WD, which seems to bring the price down considerably. I was on Ebay the other day and saw a 90 or 91 reg cab auto with 95k going for almost $7,000!!!

what they are worth depends on where you are.

the guys saying it's high are in areas where they are typically low. Around here, the 10500 i paid for my 97 is considered grand theft.

Smile Re : 96 dodge

I am pretty new to this site ...I broke one of the un-writen rules to never buy a used truck from a lot ... You never know what your getting .
I am a retired wrench ...I'm still young ..I just got smart to make money with my brain not turning a wench ... but its still in my blood ...I love to tinker .

I Have and almost new ford that is a great truck ... when its not in the shop that I am going to get rid of .

I just bought a new to me tinker toy ... I also just bought a 96 dodge 2wd less things to go wrong with the truck being a little older .

The truck I found was very clean with lots of new parts ... some good and some not so good , my truck has 150,000 and is like new in side the engine .

You never know what your getting ... I allways plan an extra $1000.00 for maintance when I buy used ... I'm past that poing right now ...LOL

I still have an account with eastern auto parts ...I pay what the shop pays and some time even better if I'm buying lunch ...LOL
This truck put me over on the new fan bearing , fan and fan clutch , I also put all new rad hose's , belt , lower charge boots , new brakes , wheel bearings ,front end allinement , batterys , overflow valve ,misc items ...

The truck had positve things about it ... new radiator , ats exhaust manifold , exhaust , new tires , full amsoil system ... thats what really sold me .... the guys on the lot had no Idea what it was and what it did for the truck.

I figured if I had to pay some and they marked up all the parts ...It would have cost me over 3000 grand in parts and atleast another 1500 in labor.

Make sure you check out what ever you buy and think about the life span of the normal wearing parts ...

Good luck

Greg
