I just got my truck back togather and running I put head gaskets studs 60lb springs ats exhaust manifold twins(hx35/hx55) and some other small stuff and I got a used ip out of a junk yard and put on it. Now when I want to start it I have to use starting fluid to get it started but after its started it idles fine and runs good so what could be my problem? After I get it running I can shut it off and try to start it right back up and it still wont start with out starting fluid.

Where the fuel is leaking out.

Seriously, if it won't start right back up without ether it's got to have a big leak!

there is no fuel leaking anywhere even if i let it run in one spot it wont show a leak anywhere.if the pump if backed off in timing will it be hard to start but run fine?

Probably won't see a leak if its leaking on the suction side. It would be like sucking through a straw with a hole in it.

if there was a leak on the suction side than when i shut it off it should start right up sence there is fuel in the pump already.

Put a little air pressure to the fuel tank, that will cause the leak to show itself more obviously.

could there be something wrong in the pump to cause it in to start but run fine once started?

I agree...sounds like air. Check you oil level. If it's leaking out the front shaft seal on the IP then you won't "see" a fuel leak, but you could have one if your oil level is rising.
