Met with Vex Tuning today in Red Deer. The guys/girls there are wondering on a date to have a Diesel Dyno. Sounds like a multitude of brands from Dodge, Ford, Chev, Import, etc... It will be done outdoor so if you can predict the weather, please let me know.[laugh] This, I hoping, will be a "No Sponsored" event for some good ol' fun. That way all parties can join. What do you guys think??? What are your thoughts Jason as you are the ring leader. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all...

They want a date as soon as possible so if anyone has something in mind, please post. It will be outdoor for this one so it might be tricky. I don't think I'll be beating 570hp anytime soon. I was lucky enough that my wife let me actually buy the truck!!![laugh][laugh][laugh]

Sounds like a great event! Yes a non commercial version would be a nice change. No breaking the dyno to win a T shirt, just some tuning and all around fun.

As far as a date goes..Thats tough, I know I have a Scout campout that month, just not sure on the day yet... [redface]

Why in June, why not sooner like in early May? Sat 3rd or 10th?

I miss hanging out with everyone and then there are a bunch of new names I haven't met yet. Truck is up to snuff now so I might run the rollers, it's been about 4 years since it's been on them.

Dave, if you have no life, you should hold the next garage day event or let's finish off the clutch party. What you doing Sunday?

I was at the Airdire range this sunday...None of us fired a shoot because the fog moved in and no one could see the back board.Had to run back to Calgary to pick up supplies at Priness Auto.I think the clutch is also oil soaked.Really starting to notice its starting to grab funny and doesn't shift very smooth without the drivetrain jarring. This week I better order the clutch and also a engine rear seal and front seal for the trans..Got a little bit of oil coming out of the bottom bell housing...

1-5-3-6-2-4

Diesel Dave2

Thanks Luke...I will call you.I may also get a speedy sleeve. In case I need one...

Tate
04-07-2008, 03:29 PM
You may not need a new seal, decide once you get in there. The worst decision I made was installing a new rear main when the old one wasn't leaking.

Back to dyno dates, not sure how the 28th will work for me. I should be back up here again at the other plant. Ideally, the 14th would be my pick, as that should be on my time off between shutdowns. Assuming it doesn't go long like the one I'm on now.

Dave is there any way to pull the cover under the truck and take a look. The cam plug leaks is a common one. I thought I had main seal leakage issue, not justa leak from the valve cover at the rear, primary turbo drain leak, front main seal and somewhere else. I too lazy to fix everything.

04-11-2008, 11:29 AM
Hey Jamie,

I got the turbo on and once I get the injectors in I would like to get on a dyno. My brother is doing a bunch to his truck so he would also like to get on a dyno, we will probably make it in june but would like to get on sooner to do some tuning. I was going to see what vex would charge to get a couple runs on the dyno. It would also probably be good to get a diesel on their dyno, I think I remember you saying they havent yet but that was awhile ago. If they havent that would be a good test before all of us showed up there.

Were abouts is there shop?

dodgediesel
04-11-2008, 11:56 AM
Hey, hey. How do you like the turbo? I can't wait for ya to get those Macher's in to see your reaction. They sure make a good turbo spool fast and hard.
Vex's shop is kitty corner across the street from Home Hardware Building Center on the North end of town. There's a strip mall building there and they are on the south end of it. One of the partners there had his Ford on the dyno but it layed down some minimal numbers. It would be nice to get a Cummins on there soon to make sure they have all the right things to make this dyno day happen smoothly. They are building ramps so that our trucks are level and not sloped like most dyno's out there. That will stop the auto's from leaking ATF all over the place...

Its not bad I dont have my head studs in yet, once I do and get the machs in then I will lay it to her. When I get back to Red Deer I will stop in and talk to them, I am stuck in Weyburn right now[duhhh].

Any other brands actually gonna make a show this time? Maybe cummins is the only one to big any decent diesel HP numbers? I was hoping to see how bad they are at making HP, the lack off. Do you think any street trucks will break 900rwhp this time? We must be pretty close.

I'm going to find nitrous.... and dose the old pig. I want to see if I can make 800 with the juice. If I'm making anywhere in the 600s now. I think a less than 200 shot is more than attainable to hit 800........I dunno might have to do the cam to really break out though........have to see I guess

Nope, no sports cars.. Met up with Red 2nd gen with BD stickers the other night. Couldn't have had more than a comp box, after I got out of 3rd I had to get out of it pretty fast to keep of his tail...

Bomber, What size rims you running on the 40's. I was looking at tire rack for a set of 37's on a set of 20's rims. Pricey stuff. The tires where almost $500 per tire vs my $180 for my wimpy 285/75/16.

Hey mike. Im running some American racing 17X10 Atlas with 4.5" of back spacing. I have a tiny bit of rubbing but im gonna fix that today. The best place i found to buy cheap tires of this size is North Shore Off Road out of vancouver. Therew shipping is cheap also. I think i paid 1120 for my 37's shipped and1360 for my 40's shipped. they have some of the best prices i have found. Dave, we'll see about getting those stacks on by then. We can atleast get yours on. My progress is gonna be slow, just got the call to go back to work after I left Red Deer. It was 4:30 when they called, wanted me at the plant at 5:30![dummy]

Just got the head off (yes at 3 am, no I haven't been working on it since 8). #2 and #4 are a bit rusty, and when I removed the IAT sensor, water ran out, but it should still be good. Not sure how the short block will fair, but doesn't really matter, I got what I needed. Time to go get it worked over, and depending how long of a break I have, might have a ringed, studded head with some new F1 springs in it before May Long. Weeeee!

Mike, the format is open so far. Thats where DD and I were gonna see what they want to run. I am going for a non-sanctioned event. That is, no sponsors so we can have a totally open event to have guys with hoods up, helping each other out. I think, maybe I am wrong, we would have more of a group atmosphere with the DTR#5 Dyno for all out fun. If you think there needs to be motivation to have guys show up, then lets hear it.

Sorta what I thought based on previous meets. With out the pressure of dealers, it would seem to me a more open event. I just throw this way back to the Scotty dyno meets at Waterous in Calgary. No sponsor to "run" the event other than Waterous, which was cool. Anyhow, I will contact you next week DD and we can scrounge up a plan.

I have my doubts that I'm in. My schedule is changing to 11 on / 3 off to accommodate being available for rescue for scaffolders coming in to work that pre-turnaround schedule. I'll be doing the work of two separate jobs and getting paid for one....how impressed am I?....but, that's a different story altogether. I think it's time to go consulting.....that just might be the straw that broke the camel's back. Anyone need a safety consultant?

If it's the 7th, I'm hooped. I'm off the 14th and 28th only in June.

Didn't go for the 3788? You get the 50 trim or the 56 trim model?

went with the 82 cause he said if i end up with to much fuel i can upgrade to the 88 for about 300 bucks. 50 - 56 trim i don't even now what that relates to[dummy]

tate when did you get a 98 12v?

The trim relates to the area of the exducer to the area of the inducer. If you have the stage two like me, its the .56 trim. They are both 82mm exducer. Square that, multiply by the trim (0.56), then square root and you get the inducer size. The 1 is in the 59mm range, the 2 is in the 61mm range. Did you pick that turbo up from Tom?

I picked up the 12v yesterday. Need to get it registered, do an oil and fuel filter change, and I'll need some advice from the 12v gurus. I've got a lift pump tick. No fuel pressure gauge yet, so I don't know if someone stretched the overflow valve spring too much, or if its just a lame pump.

yeah turbo was from tom its the stage 2, said he had this one that was on a truck for about 5k so it was a little cheaper. thats sweet if you want a little better clutch for the mean time let me know i'll have this luk out soon i hope,

Does it have the HX40 outlet on it, or is it the Garrett adapter? Good that you picked it up. I'll want a ride in your rig when you get it on, I'm quite anxious to see how it performs.

I'm sure I'll need a clutch soon. I'm getting the itch to put a 3k GSK, my hot rod 370 injectors and a 10 plate in. This thing is a dog with the stock governor springs. Feels like a Smarty on half power. The pedals are opposite to my dually. Light clutch and hard throttle. Used to a real stiff clutch and sensitive throttle.

I just want to point out, 3782 garrett makes a nice secondary twins turbo. Put a S400 under it, you'll flow more than enough air for any fuel combo you can dream of. I would guess that you would have air to support 700 to 800rwhp, of course if you want to use NOS, you don't need the S400. I'm trying to find a spot to fit in my methanol kit. I might have to use the window washer bottle for this outting. I wonder how the wastegate is set-up? Stock it starts to opens around 40psi area, I currently have mine set to fully open at 35psi. I have extra 3in exhaust flanges made up for the garrett if you want to try welding as I think that the garrett stock 2 1/2 exhaust flange, I cut mine off and dumped the rest. I would like to see how Tate's 4in flange is built.

kennyblatz
05-04-2008, 07:36 PM
i got a hx 40 downpipe from tom and the flange is on the turbo tom has them made up for all of his that he sells.

yes twins would be sweet but people keep telling me about thing called an investment, i might have to buy a house soon.

Luke, buddy, you're gonna need ladder bars. You can see from the rubber marks that the rear was bouncing some. You started off good, you got at least 20 feet of decent rubber laying, but the last 20 feet you got the spring wrapping going on (rubber for 5 feet and 5 feet of nothing). Next time I'll come and visit you[duhhh] and see if I can put done a longer mark. The rig sounded good, hopefully you can put done some decent #'s in the next met. Thanks for coming out for the afternoon and no beer was drank, go figure that one out. We all where drooling over Tate's new sweet ride.

Kev, what broke? Been there, done that. My last tranny died from a intermediate shaft breaking. You're just a flat of beer away from being fixed, mostly it takes you that much beer to get around how much $$$ you'll be spending. I just found out that my head is toast. I thought that it was the VP dieing, during my air leak test, more air came out thru the push-rods than out the exhaust. I'll still running, thats whats counts. I'm gonna start the talking the wifey into letting me build a new engine for the girl.

Quick update.

Talked to VEX Tuning last night on the phone, planning for an evening meet on Thursday night (Jamie, are you available?).

Anyhow, we were going to run as many trucks as we can in the day. The price was $100 a run. Thats for the standard hookup, test run and then probably 2 or three repeatable runs.

The dyno.. Now this is good, its a DynoDynamics dyno! This is the unit that PDR has in their shop and is a drastic improvement on the Mustang dyno. It is not an inerita dyno like the DynoJet. The specs are a dual retarder roller system capable of over 2000 hp. The owner has ordered a special IRS system (strap system) to add additional vertical holding force on the rolls.

I know Piers spec'd out this unit specifically when he was at PDR for its abiltiy to be repeatable and hold pretty decent power.

June 7 is still the date and the unit will be outside their shop, its portable so weather may play a factor in the event. We hope not!

After our little chat on Thursday we will get all the details mashed out for the max amount of trucks we can run and get the sign up list for him.

It will be good... No sponsors, just some good ol fun!

I would love to join you guys, but I will be on vacation on Kootenay Lake that w/end.

My truck is pretty mild, but just bought a Smarty & playing with that these days.

I believe the June 7th w/end is Three Hills show and shine also.

Have fun guys... Joe

Kev, if you just lost your front clutches that not so bad. I doubt that all but you could get lucky. You dissembling it yourself? What type of metal and how big are the pieces in the pan? Take pictures it would be interesting to see what failed. My last tranny I broke the intermediate shaft at the driving shell and sun gear area. The rear thrust bearing broke in half. I couldn't get the transmission apart . The entire unit was scrapped except for the OD unit and billet output shaft. Clutch material and metal was pulled into the valve body causing the valve body to stop working and jam.

I'm not running the dyno, I just found out that my head or head gasket is leaking mega air (boost) into the engine, I have to see how fast I can get a head re-done. I thought that I smelt excessive blow-by when I was driving. The little breakage stuff is starting to drive me crazy.[duhhh] Nothing that a little beer wont fix. See everyone at the meet.

morkable
05-14-2008, 11:54 AM
Mike, I dont think I broke any hard parts. I havent dropped the pan yet,(no time yet) but I would bet that there would be a bunch of fibers. If I were a betting man, I would say that the tranny jumped into third gear when I went to launch.
