Jumpy Autometer Pyro

My pyro seems to be acting up. It used to be really smooth action, but now it sometimes jumps in 50-100 degree increments. (And it's possible that I saw my boost gauge just start the same thing yesterday...)

Anybody ever have that problem? Kind of irritates me; I thought Autometer's were supposed to be top-o'-the-line. (Coincidentally, what is the warranty on my gauges?)

I would assume it's the pyrometer; I wouldn't think the thermocouple could do that, could it?

I went to a store to buy Autometer or ISSPro and the store recommended DiPricol gauges, as they stated to me that those gauges experience what you are talking about.

Af first I thought they were just trying to get me to buy a more expensive gauge but then they showed me that they were the same price..

As for your problem, somone else was having the same issues with thier stuff, how long have you had the gauges? I am sure he will chime in here-

At the beginning of the summer I purchased a Z-series pyrometer and didn't install it until about August, which was when I got my newer rig. Once installed it would jump constantly and would not back off the temperature, at the right speed or consistency. With that said, I sent it back to Piers, got credited a new one and without thinking, gambled another. My new one came and I noticed the pyrometer probe was shaped differently as if they changed their design. But once installed it worked completely fine.

Other than that, if it goes south again, I'm going Di-Procol.

Email autometer and give them your model number info and details.. They are pretty easy to deal with and will advis on a fix or replace, or so I have been told.
The fact that it was working and now is not may be caused by a ground etc. Check with them.

Like ontos said, check the ground connection.

The one (Sport-Comp) in my work truck started doing the same thing, it died about a month later.

the sport comp in my truck jumps around with power draws, like lights on and then add the turn signal or wipers and it starts jumpin. If I kill some of the accessories its fine,

my autometer ultra lite pyro does this too, and when i first installed them the boost gauge was a little jerky in its movements, but now it has smoothed out. i wonder what kind of warrenty they have, i'll try to dig up the paper work on them.

Your new designed pyro that you got, did it look "bullet" shaped? And was your old one "stepped"? I've read in another post that the "bullet" shaped ones could be the culprit. I've got my pyro gauge installed and my wiring all hooked up. I have yet to tap a hole into the manifold and install the probe, but mine is the bullet shaped style. I'm wondering if I should save myself the hassel and send the whole works back or should I just try what I got? Maybe someone else can chime in on this one too.

My ultra lite does the same dang thing.......or well did, it just recently bit the dust on me!! Mine would jump between the numbers instead of making a nice smooth sweep......did it ever since it was brand new.

My previous probe was a straight bullet design but this new one is also a bullet with a half inch narrower tit to the very end. Maybe it's the step you're referring to, I don't know.

As far as taking it back... if it isn't on the fritz just leave it be. It's kinda like a Powerstroke... you get the odd one that works...

Just a shot in the dark here but I wonder if the stability of these gauges would be helped by putting a 3-terminal 12 volt regulator in line with the ignition switched power feed.

I've been a little under the weather here lately so I haven't read all this thread, so if i step on some toes please allow that I ain't up to par. I had the same problem when I installed my Autometer Pyrometer. I emailed them and they said to run a seperate ground all the way to the engine. That took care of the jumpy meter. It bothers me a little when something as important as that isn't included in the instalation instructions but so far I have not had a problem in about a year. The gauge seems to work very quickly and accurately. If it goes bad I will probably replace it with the same thing. I tapped the power from the radio power supply at the fuse panel and the light is tied into the dash lights so it dims with them.
