Jumping RPM's - Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins 24V (1999)

Hi folks!

I am from Austria! And I have a Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel (1999)!
At first -> sorry for my bad english!

My problem is:

If I drive a speed 100 km/h (~60mph) then I have 2000 rpm!
And then the rpm goes up to 2100 or 2200 rpm's! And very fast after 1 second back to 2000 rpm.
I have this problem if I drive with cruise-control and without cruise control. It's the same problem.
With the speed it's the same -> I have this trouble with every speed!

pedal position is the same!
example:
speed 60mph and 2000rpm
pedal position is the same, I don't move my feet.
And rpm going up to 2100 rpm and return to 2000 rpm.
2 seconds later the same -> and again and again.

What is that?
What can I do?
Everybody has an idea?
If you need more information let me know!

br

Sounds like the torque converter is applying and then releasing. You can try cleaning the battery cables, sometimes that will fix it. Other than that, probably have a transmission shop take a look at it.

Do you have an automatic transmission? If so, you could try this http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=614

As mentioned above, Markus (AlpineRam) has a very good understanding of our trucks, great source of information.

Steafe, I'm experiencing the same problem. I have cleaned the battery cables, but have not had any success. Earlier today, I ordered a noise filter from DTT, which is supposed to fix the problem. Hopefully, someone who's already installed the noise filter on their truck will chime in and tell you if it works ... if not, once I've installed mine, I'll let you know if it does the job! G"day mate! ....... Austria, Australia pretty close eh? (writen by an arrogant american)

This is a common problem caused by a weak battery believe it or not. Hence the info on cleaning battery terminals. Also, check the batteries (maybe time to replace), alternator output (brushes made be worn), connections, ect. Test the batteries with a voltmeter. Should be 12.7 or higher. Alternator output at idle (everything shut off) should be 13.8 or higher.

ENGLISH measurements. NOT metric! LOL

The noise filter from DTT fixed mine. I suggest you try that before going to a transmission shop.

I believe there is a bulletin from Dodge regarding that condition. They have new software for the computer to make it less sensitive to electrical noise in the APPS sensor circuit. I will assume that you don't have a Dodge dealer close by, so the above posts regarding the noise filters may be the best solution. Welcome to the site.

Sensor is located behind the starter. Easy changeout once you remove the starter. RPM will jump around everywhere when this sensor goes bad. It typically affects the fuel to the No. 1 cylinder so you could have a slight loss of power.

I read a post from Barracuda and tried cleaning the ground on the passenger side battery to the passenger side fender. It worked great so far. Its a small black wire just screwed into the fender or the best fix is to run a new ground wire from the PMC to the battery itself. Cost $2.00.

Here are the instructions.

OK, I took a look last night at the wiring I had did for the extra ground..First thing you will need to do is remove the factory air box to get access to the PCM and disconnect the batteries as a precaution b/c you are playing around the PCM, you will notice their are (3) seperate connections going into the PCM w/ multiple wires in each one. The one you will need to work with is located furtherst right (3rd one over, closest to the drivers side) , you will find (2) wires which are both ground wires, they are black w/ tan tracers and are located right next to each other . Once located, use a "scotch-lok" type connector to attach to one (or both if you choose) to the wire that will run to the battery (i used a 14 awg wire, i do not think that is critical), they are small wires and you do not have a ton of room so be careful not to rip the wire from the factory plug, i pulled the plug from the PCM to make it easier . Run the wire over to the passenger side battery and make a good connection to the Negative battery post (clean ALL terminals of all batteries at the same time), you are done! I had tried the "re-flash" from the factory to cure this problem and it worked for a week, tried the "APPS Reset", didn't work at all. I will tell you that I first ordered the DTT noise filter (about $30) to cure this problem, I hooked it up and it helped but did not totally cure the problem and about a week after that I ran the extra ground and for around 8 months it has NEVER once acted up, the reason I am telling you this is I can not say for sure if the ground itself TOTALLY cured the problem or if both needed to happen to ultimately cure it. The ground makes a lot of sense if you think of the root problem causing the erratic TC lock and un-lock, if you find you need to do both, contact DTT Transmission and get the noise filter too, it is well worth the $30.....Please let me know if the ground alone cures your problem, I am very interested to know if I even needed the DTT filter...Good luck, let me know if u have any other questions.

I think I will try the ground thing, mine goes in and out of lock-up while cruising alot. I would think that a 96 and a 99 would be simular in the tranny area?

thanks

My 03 with a 48re just started doing this also. It hunts back and forth during lock up, but only in 3rd gear, OD lockup is fine. With the OD off, when it hits around 48-50 mph the converter locks and unlucks really quick, more throttle and a few more mph it seems fine . If I slow down to say 45mph it will lock, a little more throttle it will unlock, then when it hits the 48-50 zone it's in and out, past 55 seems fine, then hit the OD button and she's fine. Any thoughts? I'm gonna clean the grounds as stated hear tomorrow and see what happens.

On the second gens it's normally electrical noise or a bad ground. Sometimes the APPS will cause this too and there's a reset procedure, actually a couple, depending on how deep you want to go with it. I'm not sure if this would be the same for your truck. Hopefully someone will chime in and let us both know!
