Joe Hellmann IC install w/pics

Well, I installed my IC yesterday. The install was about 50 minutes. Everything was perfect, the A/C condensor mounts, the crossmember mounts, the support mounts and the IC hoses. The only bad part is now my grill guard doesn't fit. I forgot to check that first. I can either modify the top brackets to make it fit or just call it good or buy a front end replacement. I'm thinking a Rancher Legend. Anyway, the intercooler looks good and looks to be very good construction. I can't really tell about benefits yet but this weekend we'll be pulling the toy hauler to go camping so I'm hoping to see a nice difference. I'll update this thread with results. All in all it's a very classy shiny piece that's a breeze to install.

Yeah, except for the grill guard. Oh well. Egt's are hard to tell at this point until I pull with it. I hope to have something on EGT this weekend.

No problem, I hadn't seen many pics either. The one thing that surprised me was that the Hellmann's was shorter. It is wider and thicker and the tanks are quite a bit bigger as well so that more than makes up for it. It is quite a bit lighter as well.

I'll be pulling my toy hauler tomorrow. I should have some good numbers by Tuesday. I don't usually pull on any level higher than 3. The stock cooling system is the next weak link. You'll run too much water temp at that point.

That's something you don't hear everyday!

The CTD cooling system has plenty of excess capacity designed into it - enough so that many drivers never get to hear the fan clutch engage.

Actually I have run into the cooling system inadequacy already. I now find myself driving by coolant temp instead of EGT. The stock system is good to cool about 450 HP in moderate to heavy towing conditions with an ambient temp of 90 or higher according to the experts. This I believe to be true because I experienced it all summer. If you run stock or just light mods with your foot to the floor and 10k behind you, you likely will never find any temps higher than 220 degrees.

Coming home from Pismo last week I had a OTR truck pull out in front of me doing 15-20 mph while climbing a 7% grade. With my Quad box on the 60 h.p. setting I had to floor it to get around the guy. I could only hit 45 mph up the grade with the throttle just about pegged. EGTs were about 1350 (limited by the Commander), but coolant temp never hit 200*. That was with 10k in tow.

Cooling

My Truck Heated up a Bitthe Juice notified me when I was climbing a steep 3-mile grade in OD. I hit 212 Temp,No-load just avery steep Grade. EGT was not the issue as much as engine Temps was.
