One of my clients is a helicopter company. They are required to defuel their birds before they work on them, and are not allowed to reuse the fuel. I went there the other day and they had four, five gallon jugs waitinf got me. They also have a 500 gallon tank that is getting full, and it costs them to have it drained, so they offered that to me also.

I am currently running 20 gallons of Jet A added to about 5 gallons of K2 and a quart of 2-stroke oil. I'm hoping this is enough lubricity to keep from shelling my pump.

So far I am getting excellent mileage and it hardly smokes at all. THis worries me a little.

I don't know how to dertermine how much 2-stroke or motor oil I need to add to the Jet A to be safe.

Anyone know?

Hi Mark, I believe that jet a is basically kerosene, which is basically a step above diesel on the refinement hierarchy. I would think that an oz per gallon would be enough. I have been wrong before, though...Mark here is a page that might help...

You might be better off with 1.5 to 2 oz's of 2 cycle oil, I don't think too much will hurt...

Do a search, I've made a few posts on it. Search JP5 or JP8 in the titles, as well as Jet A .

Not sure how Jet A compares to JP 8, but that is all the Army used in Germany back in the 90's when I was stationed there (I was a petroleum officer in the 3rd Armored Division and subsequently 1st Armored Division). Only issue was replacing the fuel filters more as like biodiesel JP 8 did a good job of cleaning the gunk out of the fuel system.

I have found lots of conflicting data, but from what I can gather Jet-A is K1, which means it burns more slowly and has less BTU's per pound, and does not have good oiling properties. Still don't know if a quart of 2-stroke oil per 20 gallons will keep my pump alive, but I can say that my exhaust temps have been totally fine and my mileage seems to be good. I will change my fuel filter soon though....

I get Jet A from time to time. I won't run it any less than 1qt of motor oil per 5 gallon Jet A. And I limit that to 30% of the total mix in the tank.

I would probably mix it 50/50 with diesel.

Cummins says you can run up to 10% WMO, so just pour the two stroke to it.



On second thought... I can't comment on the first gen stuff very well... different injectors... different pump...

THe cool thing is becaus I have my timing so advanced, the truck actually runs better with Jet A. I can let me clutch out in 5th at 20MPH and it doesn't buck or bog, just grunts up to idle!

i have a friend that works for ERA when they defuel they put this stuff in large holding tanks he brings me 110 gallons at a time when he can get it . ive run a full tank few times with no problems. there out right now! good stuff a good product to add to is heres the website

MHUPPERTZ, i wouldn't loose a whole lot of sleep on it. A lot of FBOs run jet in their support equipment (fuel trucks and what have you). Our Eagle tug runs on jet-a and the only requirement is that it has a lubricity fuel filter. The filter leaches lubricant into the fuel as it filters. I can't imagine it releases any more lube than would equate to a pint of 2-stroke per tank full. If it concerns you, put 2 in. Cummins allows up to 5% used oil by volume for the 5.9l per their web site. Enjoy the free fuel!
