Jeep liberty diesel

I saw in a magazine a while back that Chrysler was going to introduce a diesel option for the Liberty ,has anyone seen this or know what engine they are going to stuff in there ? The mag said it was a V6 they were testing but thats it. If this happens I just might get one for my wife , since getting our Ram she hates her gas powered jeep .

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

It's a inline 4 by Daimler. I think Chrysler is planning to build five thousand Liberty diesels for the first year.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

They've been selling diesels in Jeeps for years overseas, just haven't given em to us yet. It's a good start, but I wish they would put one in the Grand Cherokee, we'd probably trade our 01 in if they had a diesel.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

I sure wish DC would put the Cummins in their full size Dodge Van. I'd get rid of my wifes Chivy and get one. In fact I think a Dodge Van is next. I am at the end of my patience with Chivy.

We seem to have the moron pool here in Greenville SC working in the local Chivy dealer. Wifes van needs a new AC compressor, still under warranty, and they change the catalytic converter. Rear end has a leak, they change a seal and don't top up the fluid. And so it goes on the 11th day of August 2003. A beautiful day in the neighborhood. ;D

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

The liberty is going to have a i-4 and if it sells then plans are for an I-5 Benz diesel in the grand cherokee. North Americans have such a hard time with the diesel concept. these diesels that were tested had as much torque as a v-6 and v-8 respectively. they are also as quiet as a new vw diesel. all you hear is a small tap like an 80's 4cylinder gasser.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

The MB I5 TDI is already available in the Grand Cherokee for Europe. I believe the ratings is 165hp and 295ft lb of torque.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

The new liberty will be powered by an italian 4cyl commonrail direct injection diesel. The company is called VM Motori or something very close to that, they are owned by DC. They have been in production for 2 years in the UK. I was trying to decide between the liberty diesel and the cummins because there really aren't any other choices out there, since I dont want a gasser. I think the liberty is just too small and dinky, and the v10 TDI touareg, if it ever gets here, will be too expensive. A grand cherokee with a benz diesel would be sweet, however I doubt it will happen.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

Jeep Liberty! Do they make that for men? . According to what I read, it will have a 2.8L common rail turbo diesel built by Detroit Diesel.

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

no, it will be a VM 2.7 commonrail diesel....this is fact. I do hear from some folks in the UK on various forums that the VM is a good engine. The reason many folks have mistakenly assumed or guessed it would be a detroit or MB diesel is because most press releases just say that it has a DC built diesel. Well DC owns a lot of companies, including VM in Italy.

Too bad it's not in a cherokee or grand cherokee. Also too bad they're going to gauge diesel sales based on such a wimpy ride.

What they need it in is a small to mid size pickup that can be used by alot of fleets. (The dakota would be perfect.) I trade and get one tomorrow. Also I'd like to see a smaller sized diesel in the 1500, I don't tow alot so I really don't need all that, what I do want is great fuel economy. Something over 25 up to 30mpg would be great!!

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

Hopefully this Liberty will be the one that turns the american market on to diesel engines in small and mid-sized autos. I think they tried the same thing in the late 70's and 80's. Diesel technology has come a long way since then, maybe it will work this time.

MYMAUR;
Have you seen the DODGE SPRINTER it's not the most attractive full size van "EURO-VAN" :-, but in my opinion it's the most practicle. It's got a I-4 Mercadies diesel, with the Mercadies Auto trans. Averages a little over 30 m.p.g. highway.
I've got to give DODGE credit, their kicking some stuff in the shipping bussiness I've seen a bunch of these, with FEDX & UPS name on the side of them. ;D

Re:Jeep liberty diesel

Erics76, what magazine? The liberty diesel has been in production already for 2 years in the UK, with it's Italian VM engine. I doubt it will say VM. Just like the Isuzu engine is called a DURAMAX My guess is that it will say Jeep. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE for it to have a MB engine, but it I doubt it. The cost of the engine alone could push the liberty past it's price range. If they do throw the 270CDI engine in it, which is the engine in the freightliner/dodge sprinter, that would be sweet. Too bad the liberty is so small. If that engine were going in a cherokee, I wouldn't be placing my order tomorrow for my 04 cummins ;D
