It's a ?? of timing
First, let me say that, this spot on the information highway is great! Lots of info and ideas. Your knowledge is appreciated. Now for the last month or so I have been troubleshooting a low power issue. Went through the fuel system OK. Then the air in and out, got a bhaf and straight pipe with that, love the sound. Then I remembered reading about timing (cold start and 1800 rpm) so I did that today and at 1500rpm it sounded like a Ferd with a stuck choke.
Now is that timing? And if it is will it continue to slip? And when the timing is checked where should I time it at for a daily driver that tows once in a while? TIA of replies.

Slow timing will tend to reduce the idle speed and may require that you press the throttle a bit to get the truck started, will increase EGT under load, and will reduce power. I do not trust the concept of cold rpm limits as an indicator, because that can be due to a number of things unrelated to timing.
I would time a pretty much stock truck that is used to pull a load at 13.5 degrees, that will be slow enough that you should easily handle a 25,000 GVW without lifting the head. It is also fast enough to really make a difference in the power and fuel economy.

If you are willing to post where you are located on this and other sites, you can find a member in your area with the tools to check and advance your timing. I am in Downey CA. if you are coming my way I can do it for you.

Re:It's a ?? of timing
Anybody remember where the rodeo/chedisky fire was? I'm about 45 minutes east of Show Low. Thats about the best way to describe where I'm at.
RCW if timing is not to blame where else should I start looking?
1dslram I very rarely make it to Phoenix much less CA thank for the offer.
