delete me

Wrong forum ooops. Well since i cant delete maybe one of you guys know.

Ok heres the long short. See mods below.

Got on the truck with both boxes on, ran great pulled great, lifted truck died. Pulled the VP wire for the PM3...it wasnt that. Engine just cranked and cranked. Got pulled home about a mile. When i was slowing to turn into the drive i let the clutch out in fourth and truck fired over. Had a rough idle like there was fuel puddled in the bowls. Revved and it cleared right up. Took it back out and it pulled good up to 2100, boggy from 2100-2800, then picked back up.

Just got on it again and when i lifted it sputtered to a stop. Now it will fire kinda(feels like its way to cold out type of idle) almost running on 1 cyl feel. Dies 2 seconds later. No codes no nothing!!!!!

What could it be??

Starting at the obvious, whats your FP?
If you have pressure to the VP than it sounds like it crapped out on you.

I've been hearing that if you get out of the pedal too fast with heavier fueled trucks, it will cause the lines to air lock and will kill the engine. Try cracking some lines open if it happens again. My first thought was a dead VP, as that is exactly what happened to me, except yours started again.

Fuel pressure is unknown(guage was out of truck...yes i know im an idiot)

There is fuel up to the filter so im thinking its the VP. This will be the 4th one...out of my own pocket.

P-pump? The HO pump is holding you back anyway.

Try cracking a couple injector lines and see if you are getting any fuel there. Like I was saying, you can air lock them if you come off the throttle too quick (or so the tale goes). If that fails, I'd prepare the truck to get a new pump. Is it the original pump yet?

I cracked 4 lines...some fuel would come out when i was cranking. Should i see fuel past the VP when the FASS is cycling? Even with doing that the truck wont start.

You will only see fuel (at the cracked injection lines) while cranking. The FASS only supplies fuel to the IP. It sounds like the VP may have issues.....

As for your VP problems, where were they purchased? How long were they installed prior to each failure? I have a theory on pump failures, when I see guys with multiple failures and have a good fuel supply I look either to fuel quality or electronics. We are creatures of habit and tend to fuel up at the same place we normally do, maybe this fuel has a high water suspension or contaminant. Another possibility is an issue with the fueling box, an electrical spike can ruin a good pump.... Do you know what failed in the other pumps, electrical of mechaical problem?

All pumps were Bosch replacements done at the local Cummins shop. One failure was due to electrical lasted about 6 months, one was a plunger lasted about a yr. This pump showed none of the normal signs and has been in the truck for about 14months. Minus the boggy rpm range after the first time the truck died. I do fuel at the same place but ive never had a problem with water. It is the pump that all the city vehicles use...busses county trucks etc. This was the first tank i ran Amsoil cetane booster. Kinda weird.

As for a box failure its doubtfull. All wires are insulated and shrink taped...i took every percaution i could.

I say its a VP just because...well i drive a dodge that doesnt start,heh.

I didnt know if APPS or MAF could have something to do with it and i dont want to just start throwing parts at it.

Truck still wont start. It will crank over and sounds like one cyl is trying to pop but not near enough to run.

Seems like there are only so many things that could make a truck not start.
MAF, APPS, Injectors, Pump, Cam sensor. Aside from the obvious like a hole in the block etc(which isnt there).

I am not talking about the connection.... I am talking about a software/hardware issue with the box itself. The truck should start with a malfunctioning APPS. It could be the CPS but you should also have a code with this malfunction. From to codes being present it sounds like a mechanical malfunction of the VP.

Oh man that's not funny when that happens.. put a bunch of time or money (or both) into it and find out it was a simple fix. Sorry to hear it went like that. I have however been in the same boat. Glad to see you got her goin again tho.
