View Full Version : It's alive again, with TWINS
After two weeks with out my truck its back up and running better than ever. New goodies include oringed head, Adkins Diesel Performance Twins (HX35/HT3B), and .093 injector tubes. The only problem now is that I can not turn day into night any more. :D
Thanks J.R.

I'll carry the "day into night" flag Ryan. Consider the baton passed. :D

Yeah but you can still turn night into day with all of those lights. SHARP TRUCK:D

Im thinking about running the same setup on the project truck. Would the Custom DD5's be ok with that combo? Hx35/HT3B. Also how much does it cost to O-ring the head? And will I able to turn day to night or not?
Thanks

Bigger?? :o :o
Is the amount of smoke you have pouring out the stack not enough for you now?? LOL!
Nice little video you have there Brandon. What is the title of the track on that? It starts out pretty kewl. Makes me want to hear the rest of it.

Make that a typo. [redface] I meant to say I see bigger injectors in Your future. But hey - more fuel never hurt anyone! [laugh] Go ahead and 'update' mine if you want. hehehe!
I have to try to get it as smokey as it is in the video. Maybe that's where my headgasket went. [eyecrazy]
Not to hijack Ryan's thread, but the song's 'blank earth' from the band 'Chevelle' off their 'Point #1' album. Good stuff, eh?

I had the opportunity to check out some of the installation on Ryan's rig. For the uninitiated, it's as amazing as it is involved.
This is also the first truck with twins that I have had the chance to ride in. WOW! :D
Nice job fellas!

Actually Matt, all you need to do is ask and I'm sure you've met someone recently who would have loved to demonstrate a horizontal roller coster with you strapped in. :p [laugh]
Ryan, when are you hitting the dyno? You threw down some awesome numbers for a single turbo truck, I can't wait to see what you'll do with two!

Brandon - guess I need to work on my interpersonal skills, huh? [laugh] What's up with your headgasket?
Ryan - heard there is a run on muscle relaxers in Mooresville. That wouldn't be you trying to get the smile off would it? :D

What headgasket? You mean the one that blew out in 5 or so places? :o
I have been hard pressed to remember a gasket that was wasted this bad. If it wasnt soo much work to change I would have to laugh.
Looks like we got some bolt stretch, some o-ring compression and "POP" it went. [laugh]
Glad its Brandons truck and not mine....Ooops I forgot I blew mine out last week too.

Lost>a guy in a truck with lots of lights!! Last seen with a HUGE smile on his face!!;)

There are a few tweaks to be made, loose ends to tidy up and a gauge to be upgraded :D , and an additional guage to be added. Hopefully that all translates into dyno ing some time in the next 2 weeks. I think I need to call Peter, already and get plans under way for a new clutch. When its al buttoned Up there will be picture of the toys.

Hey Ryan, does this mean you have a hybrid to get rid of?:D ;)
carty
The Hybrid HX55 was sold before I was able to get it off of the truck. :) There seems to be small demand for those things.
:D :D After a week of driving with the twins things are great.
Max EGT so far is 1150° down from 1425°.
The big charger is makeing 15psi when the intake pressure is at 55psi. The max boost I have seen so far is between 60 and 65 psi ( I need someone to sit in the back seat and watch the gauges so i can watch the road). Smoke is way down :( I guess I need bigger injectors. I can hit 40 psi on injectors only. An IAT gauge is on the way and temps will be checked between stages, pre intercooler and at the hat when the gauge arrives. I also plan to check drive pressure and dyno in the next couple of weeks.

Are you sure that is right?
The PDR 40/3B setup makes 30-35 from the 3B and my setup will hit a max of 38 from the B/B.
Jim
I may be a bit off, there are plans for more test runs with a video camera on the gauges to doulbe check everything.
The set up I have is an HX35/16 and a BHT3B/26. I am not running a wastegate in the set up. If I build too much boost I will switch the 16 to an 18, probabbly will have to go to the 18 when I upgrade the injectors.
There are pics of the set up in my photo gallery. Ryan's Pics (http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/pics/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/18400)

I made some more runs with someone watching over my shoulder with a camera last night. Max boost was 70psi, at that time the big charger was making 22psi.

Where are you taking your boost reading at on your big charger?
Kurt
I have a port on the piping between the outlet big charger and the inlet to the little charger. If you look real close at the pic in my last post you can just make out the brass fitting and the plastic line, it almost looks like it is part of the exhaust elbow. The port is just after the outlet before any of the bends in the piping.
This shows it a little better.

I finally got all of the gauges installed along with a clutch and Input shaft that I don' t have to worry about.
Intercoolers are amizing things! I have a temp gauge in the "cold air" outlet of the HX35 and in the intake horn. I made a moderate to hard run through the gears with an empty truck. I was able to see 334° at the HX35 but at the horn the the temp was only 104°. The out side temps were in the high 80s along with the humidity. Its amazing how fast the gauge in the outlet of the HX35 will climb and how slowly it drops back down.
More playing/testing to come.

What's different now -vs- when you ran the 505/1052?

Only difference is the clutch. Those temps are at the same (505/1052) set up that I dynoed. I just finally got the second temp gauge in so I watch both numbers at the same time.

Ryan,
Now that you have a dd clutch, are you going to sledpull with it?

No Comment. :)
I do know that there is a pull in Columbus on the 15th. ;)
The truck is not ready to quite yet.

Good luck gettin into it with twins.
I know a guy that they wouldnt let pull last year, because of twins.
Maybe exhibition?
Finally had a chance to put the truck to work this weekend. Drug about 23K around for 300 miles in east central IN. To be on the safe side I backed the box down to 3x3 to see how things went. Max EGTs for the entire trip were 1175. :D Those came when climbing a long, not real steep grade, on I70 east of Indy. Started at 75 mph at the bottom of the hill and crested at 78 mph, ran at about 40psi boost the entire stretch. :D
This weekend the box will get turned up a bit to see how that works.
The best part was haveing enough speed at the end of the on ramp to walk away from the PSD with his little 6K trailer trying to get up a hill. [laugh]
