IP Front seal Old News?

This may be old news to some but hopefully not all.

If your VE injection pump is leaking out of the front seal and that is all you intend to replace, DO NOT buy the gasket/o-ring rebuild kit. It has the wrong seal. The Cummins version of the VE has a larger more durable seal because there were problems with the smaller seal leaking on the Cummins engines.

This is according to a diesel fuel lab that rebuilds pumps etc... in Tulsa, OK. The Bosch part number for the correct seal is: 2460283001 and I paid $15.18 at the counter plus tax. This is almost what the entire rebuild kit costs so if you only need the seal just buy the seal. The Chrysler PN is: 8530-6407 but my local Dodge dealer doesn't stock them anymore and I suspect that if you can find one at a Dodge dealer you'll pay a lot more for it.

I finally got my pump completely back together with the seal so maybe tomorrow I can put it back on the truck and give it a whirl.

Is it possible to move the gear in the housing enough to jump a tooth? I've heard that in some cases it's necessary to do this to get more timing advance.

It is possible to have the gear jump a tooth in the housing- BTDT, only in the wrong direction.

Now on to the seal. You are saying that the seal included in the DK121 VE seal kit is the wrong seal? Or is the individual front seal just much better? Any word on max lift pump pressure on this new seal?

The seal is completely the wrong size in the standard kit. According to the Bosch rebuilder the standard kit from Bosch does not have the correct seal. The correct seal is a separate part. The seal in the kit is for a smaller shaft and the OD of the seal is also smaller.

The larger seal from Bosch also has 2 lips to ride on the shaft presumably to give a better longer lasting seal. (No comments from the peanut gallery.) I would assume the max LP pressure could be greater but I would be afraid to go beyond what Bosch specifies. BTW, I discovered that my LP was completely shot and the IP was pulling fuel from the tank on it's own. I guess I should be glad it wasn't leaking into the crankcase. If I had a good LP my front seal would probably leak because of the miles. It was pretty worn but thankfully there was no groove on the shaft.

Everything else in the pump looked OK but I didn't pull the plunger out to check clearances. These pumps are a marvelous bit of engineering design. Especially in the throttle and govenor area. There are 3 different compound levers in there between the govenor shaft and the dump collar.

What seal kit did you get, OEM Bosch DGK-121 or ebay or aftermarket? I have used the front seal in the real deal Bosch kit (DGK-121) with no problems. Not to doubt your pump guy, but I don't buy much what most 'pump' shops say. I prefer Hilljack knowledge over what the book told him to say/do.

I have replaced two seals with the ones included in kit DGK-121. The kits I purchased have a heavy rubber incased seal with dual lips. This seal also matches the seal on the pump core I bought. The seals I removed were not encased in rubber, and only had a single lip as I recall, FWIW.

The kit I got was made by FLAG in Germany. I can't say I was very happy with it as a result. If the Bosch kit has the proper seal then I got a bad deal on the kit since I about paid twice for it not to mention fuel to go to Tulsa which isn't a trivial amount anymore. Thank you Dubya and your silly war.
