Intermittent rough idle - no smoke

This has happened twice in the past two weeks right after startup. Once cold, once sitting in the drive-thru (turned off engine to place my order). It feels as though one cylinder isn't firing. Revv'ed it a bit, no change. But, drive it about 1/2 block and it's gone. And, if I'm not being oversensitive, it seems like lately there's more ticking sounds coming from the engine than usual (not during acceleration - more at cruising). The truck has about 52k on it. I'm overdue for a fuel filter change. Does this sound like I'm losing an injector? If so, I hope it's covered by the 7/70 and/or Cummins warranty. It hasn't thrown any codes. How do I get this checked out?

I'm thinking of getting some fuel additive and hooking up my 10k 5th wheel and dragging it around for a couple of hours. Would that help?

If the mechanical part of the injector is faulty, the computer will not throw a code. It may help changing the filter and putting additive in like you suggested. May be a sticky injector.

I ordered a couple of quarts of Howes Meaner Kleaner. I'll combine that with a new fuel filter and haul my trailer around a bit. We'll see if that helps.

I've been having the same issue as MJRurvin, except I replaced the fuel filter & ran a bottle of Amsoil cleaner thru it & i am still having the issue. No codes were thrown-
MJRurvin, do you occasionaly have some hard starting/extra long cranking? Mine is and I think it is connected.

Only one time several months ago. I thought it might be my lift pump going. But, it never did that again.

My only symptoms are the sensation of a cylinder not firing at idle immediately after startup (only twice - once cold, once warm - both times quickly resolved within a block of driving) and slight ticking at cruising speed (not under acceleration).

Im interested to hear if it is an injector problem-like something sticking. I don't know how to diagnose it myself-and I still have the drivetrain warranty thru DC.

Anyone else have similar problems?

Ive been dealing with the same, been at dealer twice each time they replaced parts under warranty such as fpv and the last they did the lift pump, no change in performance nor did the problem go away, was told last time that I have two injectors on the edge of failing either really sticky or stopped up but cant replace under warranty guidelines, 57k now and still driving 120miles a day back and forth to work just kinda grown acustom to it i guess but I do have more tick at cruising speed and idle but not during acceleration which im sure is injector tick

Eventually you will need to replace your lift pump, they are problematic with 04s......I bought one just to have it on hand when mine goes out, cheap insurance! Replace that first before you chase something else, keep the old one as a spare. Dealer told me they have to see it happen before they replace it on warranty.............. If I break down in the middle of no where while towing my trailor it's going to cost me over a $1,000 dollars.

Could be a lift pump if you still have the stock one on the fuel filter canister. If you have already had the intank one put in they won't be it. I have had it happen to mine every now and then. I will have a slight vibration at idle. I just run it hard and it clears it up for a long time.

By the way, I had about 60,000 miles on it when it started and I now have 69,5xx on it now. I need to pull the injectors and send them to F1 but I haven't done it yet.

F1 will upgrade the tips for me and rebuild them after a through inspection. He puts them on his machine to test for leaks before and after the rebuild/inspection when he installs his modified tips. You have to buy the tips and the rebuild for the ones that need it is around $100 an injector.

I had the same symptoms on my 05 when I first bought it with 23k on the clock. No smoke, rough idle at start up for probably less than a minute and it did it intermittently, both at cold and warm engine crank ups. Sometimes it would go for a few days without doing it and other times it did it about every day at least once. The dealer put two new injectors in but it continued to do it intermittently. He also changed the wiring harness going to the injectors.

After getting tired of taking it back to the dealer and watching him struggle
I tried a bottle of Power Service Diesel Kleen in the grey bottle found at Wal-Mart and other retailers. It immediately stopped the rough idle!! This was over two years ago and to this date not once has it acted up. I use it every tank full now. I highly recommend it. I put up with this problem for probably over 6 months and fixed it with Power Service Diesel Kleen
