Intermittent Loss Of Power

I contributed my limited knowledge yesterday related to a problem I had earlier (last year) with my 99 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins. It had a loss of power directly in line with an intermittent loss of tachometer and an engine light. Module behind the starter was the culprit. I changed it one evening without any problem. I ahve also changed the similar module on the rear differential due to the speedometer quitting...slowly. Both of these issues I diagnosed, found and repaired based on info I found on the net.

Now I have a loss of power that started about a week ago. No engine lights have come on to date. The loss of power seems to be slightly more consistent in the mornings. I only drive about seven miles to work and it may have the "loss of power" all the way to work. In the afternoons, it may not have much power for a few miles and then it seems to "take" and may run great all the way home. Sometimes it will loose power for a few miles and then "take off" and run fine the rest of the way home.

I have made no modifications to the truck, it has 166,000 miles on it. I pull a 27 ft. fifth wheel camper once a month and I have an 18' goosneck farm trailer I pull once in a while. I would be afraid to try and pull either right now...darn, fall camping season coming to Arkansas.

I have read a lot about the lift pump problems so that would be my guess. Do I have to have a way to check fuel pressure to be sure? I have changed the fuel filter with no change noticed. I can add a fuel pressure guage if that would help diagnose the problem and I am watching a lift pump just in case.

Any of your superb expertise would be appreciated.

You can rig a temp gage to the outlet side if your fuel filter. It will attach where the front fitting is on top of the fuel filter. It will look something like this. Just use the gage and hose. I would do it pretty soon, as most think a bad fuel pump leads to a dying injector pump. Big $$$$$!

Intermintant loss of power sound fuel related to me. I hate to say it, but it sounds like a dead vp. Even if you hook up a temp fuel pressure gauge, it wont justify a healthy injection pump. Have your codes pulled (Autozone does it for free). Hopefully you won't see P0216...
