Interesting Note Regarding EGT Probe Placement

I was following the pyro probe installation instructions on Diesel Manor's website and noticed they state the following for probe placement on top of the manifold (monitoring #1,2,3):

This location will monitor cylinders 1-3. Note: Temperature will read significantly higher if thermocouple is installed here.
It's commonly known that #4,5,6 run the hottest so many people put the probe lower down on the collector to monitor those cylinders. I was curious to know what kind of temp differences there might be between the two locations so I emailed Diesel Manor and asked them. This is their response:

That's right, the probe is closer to the combustion chamber and therefore hotter there. Usually 100 degrees
I was pretty shocked to hear the difference can be 100* between the two, despite #4,5,6 running hotter on average. I guess it's a good thing my pyro goes up to 2000*!

I am pretty new to the deisel thing. But the more I read about EGTs and probe placement the more variables there seems to be (pre turbo, post turbo, heat soak time, 24v vs. 06s....). With all the variables it seems EGTs can vary by as much as 500-600 degrees. At this point I am thinking I need to watch the EGTs and blow it up once to see what the max EGT should be. It kind of reminds me about a comment from Richard Petty regarding his thoughts on how car telemetry would improve things for him. He said gauges don't matter because you have to drive it until in blows up anyway.

Well I asked this question about where everyone was putting their EGT probe. The instruction with my Attitude said to put it on top near the outlet from cylinder #3. I was think it would be better closer to the inlet of the turbo. It seemed a strange location that was recommended by Edge so after asking the question people posted about a divider web in the collector so there is no real location pre turbo that can see ALL 6 for a true average.

One of the places I was pointed to was Diesel Manor and when I saw the locations they suggested and saw that the top location would read high I decided to put it there. It now matches what Edge recommends and if it reads high it just means it will go into de fuel a bit sooner.

I am interested mainly in condition monitoring but also interested in some performance increases but not at the cost of a premature failure.

The closer to the cylinder the hotter the gases. If you could get your pyro right up against #6 cylinder would be the best place but due to engine compartment constraints It's not a viable place for most do-it-yourselfers.

Yeah, that would be the hottest but IMO being able to monitor all 6 with one reading would still be the best.

It only makes sense the gases will be hotter the closer you are to the head. I was just kinda shocked the difference could be so huge. I guess that means you can safely push your EGT's a little further if the probe is mounted on top.

Just a question but, why do the last three cylinders build so much more heat than the first three? This doesn't make too much sence to me?????

farthest away from fan and radiator. means hotter coolant cooling the cylinders so they run hotter.

I believe it also has something to do with coolant dead ends and that end of the block. There is no coolant flow so that end of the block is hotter. There was a wright up for the second gens on installing a part from cummins that would bring coolant full circle.
