interesting comments on the Cummins 5.9L
Thought this one was pretty funny. I was over on a Ford PSD enthusiast page looking for tech info on a friend's 7.3, and found a thread comparing the CTD with PSD's & Duramax's. Here's a few quotes to give you the flavor of the commentary:
"Traditionally the Izuzu is a better desiel than the Cummins. More often than not a cummins will run 2500 hours and then they get to be pretty tired. On the other hand it is not uncommon to see izuzu desiels and Duramaxs with upwards of 40 thousand hours on them and still running strong. The Izuzu's is more refined than the Cummins too. You start up both on a cold mourning the Cummins will sit there shake, rattle and puke raw desiel all over the place for half an hour or more and the Izuzu will run rough for about 30 seconds, level off and run quite smooth. A Duramax will last three times as long as a Cummins, and a PSD twice as long. "
-and-
"The Cummins are not cammed anything like PSD's & Duramaxs in automotive applications and are governed at approximately 2200-2400 rpm. The way they gain there power is through gearing. They have more gears and higher rear end numbers, so they only seem more powerful. But they don't last as long as the other engines, that's been proven."
-and-
"I personally believe that Dodge will drop the 5.9 in the next couple of years. Their dealing with an engine that was never designed to be used with this high of horsepower combo or run that kind of rpm and the engine is old and outdated. It will be hard for dodge to bump up the horsepower much more with out running into emissions and bottom end problems. The Cummins have always had weak rods, bearings and crankshafts and are constantly blowing them up."
-and-
"The cummins engine by FARRR is the roughest deisel out We only put in Cummins if requested and that is usually because of a Cummins dealership in the area for use. The Duramax is VERY quiet and the Ford is BIG torque. Cummins(Dodge) loses all around. Nobody in the diesel industry respects Cummins anymore."
On this thread, a few people who either owned Dodge/Cummins trucks or, apparently, owned PSD's and Duramax's and wished they owned Cummins, pointed out the flaws in these sorts of arguments.
The webmaster then responded:
"Thread locked. Its apparent the trolls are loose. A person's existance must be pretty boring to feel the need to troll other sites. It you want to discuss your Dodge trucks please do it on a Dodge site. I'd rather not have such discussion on a second rate truck here."

Sometimes I just wonder where people come up with stuff like that? Do they just start typing and type whatever comes to mind...without any evidence to support it? :
Did that come from http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/ ? I've been called a troll over there for talking about my Dodge as well. :

Funny is right. Now I generally don't get into the brand wars or loyalist attitude threads. If you like ford or chevy good so do I. I just chose the Dodge for a variety of reasons the main one being the cummins but that was just my personal preference. Where do they get such blatantly wrong info, do they truely believe this stuff.
2500 hours @ 50mph=125,000 miles before the cummins craps out.
40,000 hours @ 50mph =2,000,000 miles and still running strong
My engine certainly isn't governed at 2400rpms its more like 3400. Which granted is less than the others but they should be asking themselves why theirs needs to be governed so high.
Now I have an auto so I must have missed out on all those extra gears. And yeah my 3:54 rear gears are just ridiculously high, I suppose that goes for the 3:73's and the 4:11's out there too.
The B10 and the B50 life of the Cummins is the highest of the three.
Nothing against Isuzus but we have a couple NPR's ( I know it is not the same engine) at work and they are rough as heck and smoke like crazy when cold started and for a lot more than 30 seconds. In all fairness the Duramax may very well be smooth as silk after 30 seconds but not if it is anything like the NPR engines.
I could go on and on and dispute everyone of those false claims as I am sure many could. I think all of them are fine vehicles and have pros and cons but such blatant misinformation is just downright wrong to put out. Nice to see they have such an impartial moderator as well.

What's the mystery? Democrats have been doing that for 50 years!

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting something like that here. Incanus didn't do anything inflammatory, he was actually restrained about it. I've seen a lot more inflammatory stuff and sometimes inappropriate stuff on politics and religion on this forum, and it goes right by without an official comment.
For myself, I'm curious why Dodge/Cummins always gets hammered by PSD and Duramax people. They really do get riled up about it, and unfairly characterize the D/C as "junk," as though everybody just knows it. You don't see the same sort of condescending feelings about Fords or Chevys. Why does Dodge have such a reputation?

oh well, leave them to their sites. I personally think it's a waste of time to post this over here. I'm not exactly sure what purpose it's supposed to serve other than to get people riled up about it.

I absolutely agree! I see very little purpose to this thread.
Also, Do not allow this to become a brand war.

Re:interesting comments on the Cummins 5.9L
All right, I'm gonna throw my 2 cents worth in.
The 5.9 started out as an agri application back in the early 50's. It was non turbo and put out 90 - 100 hp at 2200-2400 rpm. It was designed that way. Pure and simple. The block was then and still is now, massive. Lots of iron. Technological advances has brought that engine up to what it is now. Think of it as the small block chevy of the in line small diesel line.
The powerstroke started off as a light/medium duty engine in a lot of "Binders". Also as a non turbo. In their original configuration they did a good job. Then technology comes along and things advance. I don't think IH had the engineering desire or possibly expertise to really develop that engine to its full potential because their "thing" was trucks, not engines.
Isuzu builds great small engines, both gas and diesel. I think the duramax would be a very good engine if it was all iron. The japanese can build very good equipment. Look at some of their torpedos, submarines, aircraft, electronics, and optics. The duramax is a new area for them and it takes time to get rid of the bugs.
The thing that makes the 5.9 so good is that it is built by someone that builds just engines. Period. And it's had 50 years to refine itself. Cummins has not expanded out like a watermelon plant and dipped into anything and everything that might make them some money. Cummins focus was on engines and engines only. International Harvester and General Motors was on everything.
Remember the old saying; Jack of all trades, master of none.
Finished with my rattling. Beer is gone and I got to tinkle.

Funny....
My 89 CTD had 8800 hours on its with still 460 Psi compression and never used a drop of oil... :
40,000 hours on a DMAX.. I don't think so.. Even in the stationary engines industry (Compressors et al) thats obsurd. If you run 24 hours a day all year you hit 8000 hours, thats 5 years of nonstop run in the DMAX??? NOT.. The studies have been done and 200,000 miles is the average life of the Dmax engine which works out to an average of less than 5000 Hours.. The overhaul interval for the BTA5.9 is 10,000 hours..
Somebody was smokin somethin on that thread.LOL..

I'll buy a cummins when they become available in a REAL truck.
Mods, you probably need to close this thread as it's becoming a brand war. This is exactly why I left the other sites. Now this site is turning into one of those.
Just came here to talk DIESEL. Not who's truck is best.
