Angry Intercooler on Backorder ?

04.5 Dodge 600,slight front end boo boo, truck is out of paint shop tomorrow BUT ! Intercooler has been on backorder for 3 WEEKS now ! No shipping date yet,No used ones to be found and now I hear nasty rumors that all NEW intercoolers to be shipped are the plastic tank variety ! My truck originally had an ALL aluminum one, that is what I want but it seems I have NO choice ! Anybody got a line on a good used one ? 2415 miles and it will sit in the parking lot, waiting for an intercooler while I drive the 01 everyday. This sucks ! there, now I feel a little better, except for that little issue about the EDGE Juice being delivered tomorrow for this truck,I guess I can mount it but NO road test yet

I know, its killing me to wait ! Havent even had a chance to drive this one yet other than in and out of paint booth. And that plastic cooler crap is just that,I hope it is not true, dont know yet .I have heard the plastic ones blowing the tanks off on the dyno,NO problems on the All aluminum ones. We shall see.I have seen plastic Rad blown at 15 PSI,seeing ANY intercooler with plastic makes me nervous, guess that is what you get for $40 K huh !

05 intercoolers will be plastic and won't hold the high boost like the old ones.

Nope. Up to the O4s all metal including the 600s. 05 model year begins the plastic tanks. You would think that with all the noise made by the Ferd owners regarding the plastic tanks failing on their ICs that the industry in general would learn but I guess its all about saving $$$. Screw the consumer.

I also read some where that the old part number changes up to the plastic one. That's probably what you'll get.

Okay, stupid question perhaps. How would one tell if an intercooler was the plastic tank version?

Got an 04.5, and had heard rumors about this but dismissed it as ridiculous.....

TIA.

To answer your question, gsdog, plastic tanks are generally identified by reinforcing ribs cast into the plastic at fairly close (1/2 " to 3/4") intervals all along the tank. An aluminum tank has a smooth finish with no signs of reinforce and NO silver looking zipper type crimp between tank and core ( Another place to fail )hope that helps, for reference, look at your radiator
