Intake temp sensor missing?

I have an 89 and I took a look at the sticky of what all the wires and sensors do but when i go to my truck my intake temp sensor is not there just a pipe plug. my grid heaters work they just dont light in the morning when it is cold for a pre heat when I turn the key on. other than that they cycle on and off for a few min of driving depending on how cold it is. I was reading that in 89 they got a 15deg or a 59 deg controller depending on the number on the controller?

You have one of the really old ones that uses the coolant temp sensor.

humm.... cool I didnt read about that any where that I can remenber. So what can I do to get the grid heater to work how it should? It dont cycle the heaters for a pre heat. It works only when it feels like working some times it will pre heat when its like 40 deg and then it wont when its in the 20`s but it will always cycle them once its running.

That's odd. What's the serial number on your controller?

well I found 2 numbers one was on a red peice of tape that said cummins on it and that number was 6314415. Then I took it off the fire wall and found a sticker on the edge of the box that the number on that was 0020265A

Question, if it is the type that uses a coolant temp sensor instead of intake manifold temp then I have to wonder if you are using the block heater? If so that would explain the lack of a preheat cycle until the engine gets going.

That's one of the old 15 degree controllers then. Anything lower than 0080000A is a 15 degree unit. No preheat unless the temp is below 15 degrees F, but they will postheat for emission control when it's down in the 30's and below.

Well that`s good to know. It just baffles me that it will pre heat some times when its above 15deg. Can we get them any more is it some thing that I could get at cummins?

If you buy a controller it will be the 59 degree unit. They are no longer made but there are reman units available from Dodge, Cummins, and other sources.

This could be superceded by now but the 1989 Dodge Cummins part book lists the Heater Control Module p/n 3613546
