Installing head studs

I'm going to be getting head studs within the next couple of weeks. My question is how difficult are they to install? What all is involved in the process. I was thinking of doing it myself or with my friends help if I can get him to get off his bike for a couple minutes. Anyhow if it's too involved for the average mechanic then how much can I expect a shop to charge to do it for me?

Thanks guys

It's not a real bad install but it's definately a pain. Mainly cause your hunched over the engine for a couple of hours torquing, untorquing, retorquing, unretorquing, and re-retorquing and adjusting valves every time you retorque. It took me 4 hours going slow doing one at a time, cleaning the holes out, and doing it by myself (not a lot of room for a helper other than handing you tools and what not).

I know that there is alot of guys on here that have done studs without lifting the head, but personally I did and fully recommend lifting the head, putting in the studs, and then putting the head down again with a new gasket. It takes longer, but IMHO you erase any chances of problems.

adam, ray just installed head studs in a 3rd gen trk real recent. I have talked to someone who knows alot about the cummins and morkable is right, the best way is to remove the head and set it back down on them. I dont know how much ray would charge I would say 4 hrs of labor I guess. I could help do yours sometime when im off work. I havent installed any yet but I need to know how.

It is actually easy,, just takes time,, nothing tricky about it. Just get a good shop manual so you know the proper torque sequence, and torque numbers. I had a nice little over head creeper,, it is awesome,, made it so much easier to work on the engine.

Thanks Jesse, that's cool i'd be down for that. I think Ray told me something like 400 bucks to do it, but I can't remember if he was actually saying he'd charge 400 to do the job, or 400 bucks to purchase them. I wouldn't mind spending a couple hundred to do it, but 400 seems steeper than I thought it would be.

Morkable a few friends of mine use a tractor with front end loader and fork attachment with a wood pallet to do the work on their engines....they have lifted rigs and it works out very well. They're PSD's so I can see the tractor parked in front of them often....ha ha JK

Actually Jesse the only reason to remove the head is to bottom tap the block. The actual stud install itself is done with the head on.

Thanks, I think someone tryed to email it before and it is just too large.

I can get to it on the hemi sites (well I guess I can) but I would really like a hard copy to keep in the shop/truck. But maybe thats not an option, I dont know.

Thanks for the offer though

Yeah I tried to e-mail it to my other e-mail account and it wont work. But hey Free is a good thing, and you can always print out the pages you need. But I know what you mean about a hard copy, last time I needed it my laptop had to be setup in my garage and no matter how carefull I was the keys and screen got a little dirty.

I will probably call around and get some prices from local shops on how much they will charge. I have more power tools in my collection than I do mechanic's tools and I hate to bug my friends to help me or lend me their tools.
