Inspection Help ASAP...

Howdy everybody! I just got back from an auto place where I FAILED my inspection due to having no muffler! I have always heard and read that having a turbo counts as a legal muffler due to the turbine housing... Does anyone have any info on this like a quote that has the specific info that I can print off and show the inspection dude? I am a little miffed since I don't exactly have 5" in/out mufflers laying around, nor want to buy one and cut my exhaust piping to fit it. Thanks for any help guys!

-Chris

Look up the texas penal code and look under the vehicle inspection subsection....or just tell them to show you the part in the inspection handbook where it says that a turbocharger is not a muffling device. Every inspection station has to have one.

Take that back, the penal code just says it must have a muffler, not what a qualifying muffler is. I can't find the handbook online yet but every IA has to have one.

20.15 Exhaust System. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation.

Muffler defined: Muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and/or turbine wheels for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from a diesel engine, both of which are effective in reducing noise.

That's it Nasty.

Inspection stations think they are the police or something. They think they know everything.
You're gonna have to go somewhere else. and file a complaint against that station.

I am going to print it all out and write down the web address and show it to them because they wouldn't let me leave until I paid $12.50, or else I would take it elsewhere. If they still won't pass me then I'm gonna blow a gasket on the dude! I told him when I was there that "In Texas a turbo is considered a legal muffler", he said "Well I don't see one". I politely replied "It's under the HOOD" and then he started bickering that a turbo doesn't count and blah blah blah, so I went out and attempted to start my truck for a few minutes (I'm getting the horrible click of death) and after it finally fired I drove away... lol Thanks for all the help guys, I am going to go tommorrow most likely and try my best to prove the dude wrong...!

Yeah just tell him to look it up in the handbook, it should say the exact same thing.

I was worried about my exhaust when i took it in for inspection , my cat and muffler both fell off , and a 5" SS pipe fell back up in there... So i did the only smart thing to do , took it to the shop that sold me the exhaust, wouldn't have been real good business for them to fail me

I hope you get it worked out Chris.

LOL, yeah dude I was not a happy camper when he came back and told me I failed Did you get your timing set back OK yet? I am sending out some new bolts for it today for ya! I have always taken my truck up there for inspections, kinda aggrivating that he argued with me that a turbo is a mufler after he didn't know I had one lol. I am going to print off that entire webpage that TheBigNasty posted and show him, If they don't pass me then I will go somewhere else. Gonna put my new starter on first before I go back up there though

Timing Set has not arrived , but i'm not gonna panic just yet , It took over a week for it to get to maine (and i sent it priority mail), and only about a 6 hour drive from my house at that. So from texas to my place , i figure a couple weeks before i get too concerned

I think my starter I bought on E-bay will be here monday so I am going to throw that on and ride up to the inspection place to argue with them if I have to lol I WILL pass my inspection...
